1066 charging problem

My 1066 will not charge the batteries. There are 2 prongs on the alternator and one broke off. Since it looked like it went to the same point i put a spliter on the one good prong and it was a dead short, so i left it unplugged. Would this broken prong cause the alternator not to charge the batteries? Also it was -25 here for about 2 weeks and thats when the batteries went dead. I thought starting it and running it for a while would charge the batteries, no such luck.

The one broken prong is likely to be from the internal reg. Pull the alt apart ,install new reg.,problem may be solved.

I agree. There might be a way to reattach the wire that went to the broken tab, but a wiring diagram is needed. What type alt is it?? We can help, a new regulator might be needed because of the dead short. JimN

Delco made several series is it a stock alternator, or a 10SI automotive Alt. Look in the archives for a 10SI alternator wiring to see if it is that one! JimN

Early 66 series used external regulator type alternator, the 2 prong plugs into the rear of alt and on the 10SI internal regulator type the plug is on the outer shell, top or side depending on orientation.

I think that is correct, as long as it is a Delco-Remy 72 amp or better the only difference will be where the plug ends up. Mine died, I just happened to have a couple Delco alternators on hand, one said 72 amp. Bolted right up, but plug is now on side instead of straight up, but works fine. DOUG
