Hard starting diesel

I am looking at a 504 diesel. The guy says he always has to using starter fluid to start the engine. Is this normal for this model?

Thanks

Yep. I think the 504 is one that uses glow plugs. When they are shot the tractor will require ether to start. I had a 444 and 656 that was that way. When the glow plugs didn't work they wouldn't start if it was 100 degrees out.

I have a 504 Utility with the 188 diesel engine .Yes it does use glow plugs to start. Good litle tractor, easy on fuel. I would strongly recomend replaceing the glow plugs and skip the ether.Too easy to crack a piston or blow head gasket with too much ether.Mine starts easily on cold mornings with about 45 seconds of glow plug pre heat time. Starting ether is for green tractors.

I have a Farmall 504 diesel and it requires glow plugs if it is summer or winter. If just one fails it will start hard. It takes about 20-60 seconds for it to warm before starting. NO ETHER.
