Super M transmission knock

Last November, my Super M developed a knock at the front of the trans while idling. I pulled it back to its parking space and let it sit till this weekend. Got the clutch, clutch shaft, input shaft, and belt pulley removed.

I expected to find this:

</a>

But I didn"t expect this:

All the other bearings feel good, with no noise, including the countershaft. I"ll still replace the input shaft bearings and front seal. Luckily the lower constant mesh gear has no damage whatsoever. I"ve inspected it several times.

Question: How do I get the pilot bearing off? Puller? The hydraulic reservoir makes it difficult to get the angle to tap it off.

Thanks, Chris B.

I had the same thing several years back when pilot bearing went out and chipped several teeth in my Super M. I decided to only replace pilot bearing and give it a try and had loud knock in transmission when I got it going so I parked it for several years. Now for the good part, had someone wanting to buy tractor for sometime so I finally told him to come get it. He came by with new battery and fresh gasoline and we had tractor running and knocking shortly. He decided that knock was not going to do more damage than was already done so he drove tractor about 7 miles home. I followed him in my truck and about half way we pulled over on gravel road and he said when we went around sharp turn at rather high speed knock went away. Sure enough everthing sounded good and he had since worked up 10 acre truck patch and planted 3 acres sweet corn with tractor and all is well still.

Don't misunderstand me, I have every intention of changing the input shaft/upper constant mesh gear. Especially since I have it all apart. I'm just glad it didn't wipe out any other gears.

Just have to figure out how I'm going to pull the pilot bearing.

Looks as if your 4/5th slider gear needs to be replaced.I recently replaced one in my SH. I removed the rear end platform to gain access to the gear. Marv

It has been several years since I have had one out but it can be done without splitting tractor. Do not remember just how to go about it but after you start it is pretty obvious what has to come out. Clutch disc (but not pressure plate) will come out bottom but it is a PITA to get worked back in, about like working a Chinese puzzle.

Went back and reread your post and looks like I should have done that before I made my first post.

I already have it all apart. I'm talking about pulling the bearing off the upper shaft. I think a small bearing splitter will do it.

Actually, my real problem is tearing apart the input shaft assembly. I've had the yoke flange off once before, but it is not budging this time.

What makes you say that? Every gear I have access to is spotless except for the aforementioned upper constant mesh. And I never had any problem with the transmission jumping out of 5th, even when pulling 4 large round bales on a 34' trailer. It's a strong Super M.

Somebody is going to have to refresh my memory on this, but nothing rides on the gear that had broken teeth, right? and 5th slides up on the cut teeth, so why change the gear if it doesnt use anything on those broke teeth. I do know to get the bearing off of the top shaft, take out that bolt and tap it a little, or at least thats how mine came off.

The chiped gear drives the countershaft and is loaded in gears 1 through 4 and reverse. Since you have the input shaft out and top off transmission, the top shaft with the bearing you want to replace can be removed pretty easy by removing the 3 bolts at rear and sliding shaft, rear bearing and cage forward. Keep track of shims and reinstall the same. You can use a puller to remove pilot bearing or take off rest of outside bearings and split inside race or knock off. You could also do this with shaft in transmission but more unwanted pieces could end up inside transmission. Simpler to install pilot bearing on shaft outside transmission also.

Im sorry, I though the big one drive the lower shaft, and thge upper one was just kinda there, and the outer edge of the teeth were ground down for 5th. its been too long since Ive been in one.
