water in my oil

My husband changed the oil in my tractor and was in shock, my oil was gray with water in it. We discovered the guy that overhauled it before we got it did not tighten the head gasket bolts but finger tight! My husband tightened them down but we don't know just how tight they should be. It's a 1928, 15-30 McCormick-Deering. Help!

dont have a manual for that rascal, but here is a link to standard torque specs for bolts. i would prolly be a little on the conservative side being that it is an old motor, and you dont know the condition of the headbolts. some guys say tighten them till they break, then back off half a turn!!!

Don't be surprised if you have to change that head gasket again. I just changed the head gasket on a 140 that had 5/8" head bolts (3/4" socket). The manual said 80-90 ft-lbs. You have to tighten them in a specified sequence.

Marj, Tell your husband to tighten the bolts enough so the coolant doesn't get into the oil. :)

An old aviation mechanic I know never uses a torque wrench, he clicks his teeth when the nut is tight enough.

My concern is that the gasket may have been damaged by the engine running with the bolts loose.
