Farmall C 2 bottom 1 pt hitch plow Junk?

I have a farmall C with a 2-12 bottom plow that is mounted on a frame to the bell housing and it has a chain for lifting on the rear rockshaft. The front of the plow has another lifting arm that just rotates the front mount which seems to change the pitch of the plow.

The plow lifts up with a chain that is bolted to the beam and as it lifts up, it twists some and has no side to side stabilization. Is this how they were supposed to work, or did someone change something? When I drop the plow it keeps side drafting the tractor and tries to pull the front end into the furrow. I have to keep the front wheels cut 45 degrees of more just to keep it going straight.

I figure that this plow must have just been a bad design, or someone did something to it to make it bad. When I got the tractor, I noticed that the left brake was adjusted all the way tight, and the pedal still dropped almost to the bottom before stopping the tractor. S, I was thinking that the previous owner must have been having the same thing happen and was riding the brake the whole time he was plowing.

Has anyone had any experience with these plows? I did a little bit of looking online and couldn't find a model number for it. All I know is that it's frustrating!

Any information would help.
Thanks,
John

Hi John,

I have been asking all kinds of questions about Farmall C/Farmall Super C Plows. Some very helpful tips. I can't say wether or not I can help but will try.

It sounds like a C-294 Plow. They are controled with the touch control, where one lowers the plow and the other sets the draft. I believe that is what they called it? The one that sets the draft I believe is causing the problem. Is there a way of making an adjustment like a turn buckel? Sounds like you have to take up on that slop, and not seeing it makes it difficult. Hope this helps.

It sounds to me like the plow is not mounted properly, or may be broken.

Unfortunately I really can't help much beyond that observation. Never seen one of these plows up close.

I think I have what you are talking about in the woods.

Isn't there a lever on the back to adjust the angle? You squeeze the lever and move it on a notched quadrant?

Never used the plow, but it was off a 200 and had the ACE bottoms and other parts that fit our 3pt IH plows.

You must not have it mounted correct as i had one like that and it worked just fine. You are correct the other rockshaft sets the tilt of the point to plow either deep or shallow. I would get an owners manual so you would then know how to set and operate it. What is your furrow wheel of the tractor set from where the front bottom cuts remember you onle have 14in from the furrow to where the point will cut when the plow is lowered. That wheel must be set correct.

Sounds like the trail wheel is missing. Side stabalization for these plows was provided by a long slide at the furrow side and the trail wheel. Without the trail wheel the plow would move sideways. The beam of the plow had to swing to allow the entire unit to make tight inrow turns. Post a pic especially of the rear of the plow and maybe we can figure it out. I suspect your plow may have been two 14's. Larry in ATL

Nothing wrong with the design of that plow. They are as good a plow as ever made. I have plowed many an acre with one identical to it. Something is out of whack be it the tire spacing, plow mounted wrong or whatever. Both rear tires need to be within an inch of being all the way in on the axles with that 12 inch plow. If you can post or send me a pics of the plow mounted on the tractor I may be able to see if something is wrong.

Most of the old C plows just had an extra long landslide on the back plow and no furrow wheel. They work very well to. Both My C and SA 2 bottom plows and my SA 1 bottom plow had just the landslides when new. They were available either way.

John: This has to be a people problem. I never owned one of those plows, however there were hundreds of them in my area, and those old boys did some of the finest plowing known to man.
