You will need to take off enough stuff until you can push up on the vertical steering shaft,rotate it, and drop it back down into engagement with the steering column worm. I doubt any part of that system is the least bit worn. However, it is possible that the bearing holding the end of the steering column fell apart, allowing the worm enough clearance to disengage from the worm wheel.You also need to jack up the front end and make sure that the steering arm contacts the frame before the worm and wheel travel too far and become disengaged. You need to check this carefully with the front wheels vertical, and leaned in both directions. Another cause of excess travel could be the steering arm became loose, and is jumping over or stripping the splines. |
