Just got a HD 4 Allis trac loader. Ran it for several hours, maybe a tank and a half of fuel, ran fine, then she started starving for fuel or so it seems. Let her sit a while and she starts right up and runs fine for a few minutes then starts acting like I am shutting fuel off slowly until completely dies. That might take 10 or 15 minutes. Changed filter and made sure sediment bowl and screen were clean. Only odd thing I could find was that there was no gasket on sediment bowl. It wasn't leaking, but could it be sucking air. I did pull sediment bowl and drain tank. It looks clean. Any ideas on what to try next appreciated. |

| First of all, thanks for the pictures. Really helps that I know I am working on the right part. Mine is a little different but does look just like the one in the book. I do not have the spring and ball in mine so I assume previous owner already removed it. I have been talking to a re builder and he says if ball and spring are gone return line must be plugged. Should I remove it and blow it out? Will that buy some more time? Where can I find a throttle cable as mine is broke? Sorry, I stuck in a different subject there. |

Housing pressure regulator valve photos in reply to Kevin Roberts, 06-03-2012 15:53:10

| | The valve it right where I said it is. The fitting with the nipple on it that the return fuel line hooks too. Technically, it is the housing-pressure-regulator-valve. Has a glass ball and spring in it. Maybe your's was already removed by someone else trying to do a short term fix?

| | Thanks for posting those pics since the valve I was describing isn't like what he has. As many years as I've worked on equipment I've never seen one of these valves that had the barbed fitting on it. Everything I've ever seen had the plain old male and female ends with whatever fitting was needed screwed into the female side to match with the return line. All the ones I've ever bought are the plain type, do you know if this type, with the barbed fitting is even available anywhere anymore? Like they say, you learn something new every day......... |

| I'm not even sure it can be bought anymore. I think replacement parts are more conventional. The replacement regulator valve screws directly into the pump top-cover, and then a barbed 45 degree elbow fitting screws into it. In this guy's machine - it may or may not still be original. |

| Given the symptoms I agree with LJD. To test the idea take the fitting in the return line out of the pump and turn it upside down and, using a small pin punch, knock the ball and spring out of it. If it was clogged you should get alot of black 'gink' out of it. Clean it out really good, put it back inline, and see if it runs normally after that. Like LJD stated this isn't a permant fix but it will get you a little more life out of things until you can get the pump properly repaired. |

| OK, I pulled the return line and then removed the fitting into the top of the pump but did not see anything like you described. No ball or spring. I must not have removed the correct piece. Do I have to remove more or was I on wrong area all together? |

| | The piece being described should have a small male end threaded into the pump, and typically a larger female end that the return line attaches to. Once you pull it out of the pump turn it upside down and look at the end of the small male part. When you do that you ought to be able to see a small ring pressed into the end of the fitting holding the ball and spring in place. To get it out come in from the female side with a small diameter pin punch to knock everything out the male end. I've looked for the past ten minutes trying to find you a pic of what to look for/at with no luck so I hope this clears things up at least a little bit for you. |

| Mine has a fitting like you describe and then a 90 deg. elbow that the line attaches to. I think I that I pulled the correct pc. based on your description, but did not see the parts you mentioned. If they are not there, what does that indicate? I will check again this evening and make sure I did not miss something. |

| | Most likely the plastic dampener inside the injection pump is breaking apart. Very common problem in Stanadyne/Roosamaster pumps made before 1985. Will take $30 in parts to fix -but labor is a different issue. It's a one hour job with the pump on the bench. If you send it out, charged run $350 up to $800. What happens is - the plastic ring breaks into small piece, and those pieces get stuck in the fuel return circuit. Then the internal pressure in the pump gets so high - it exceeds charge pressure and runs out of fuel. Turn it off, let it sit a bit, and it will start right up, then peter out again. You can unplug the return circuit and get some extra use out of it - before fixing properly. Especially the fitting that screws into the pump over and has the spring and ball into it. |
