Topic: JD 440 steering clutch

I have a 1958 JD440 that after sitting over the winter, the left track seems to be slipping. Under load it pulls to the left. The steering lever on the left side pulls back much further than the right side. Will adjusting the clutches correct this problem or is there something more wrong? Thanks. Russ

| How far back the steering clutch lever pulls is a function of brake adjustment, not clutch. The free travel at the beginning of the stroke tells you if clutch adjustment will cure it. If free travel is good then chances are it leaked oil past the seal on that side and the clutch pack is oil-soaked. You can look thru the adjustment hole to see if the clutch fingers are in contact with the throwout bearing. They shouldn't be.

| Thanks for your help. I think the problem is in the free play. The lever comes back almost to the seat before it engages. I use this dozer very little so as long as it was working I left adjustments alone. I'm fairly mechanical but haven't done much with dozers. I noticed if I pull the lever hard, the clutch springs back rather than staying engaged. I don't have any need for the machine so was planning on selling it. Since everything else works well, I want to fix this before selling it. Thanks for your guidance. It's greatly appreciated. Russ
