I have recently acquired a 410b for the farm that has a couple of problems. First, it wants to steer to the left constantly. You have to keep steering to the right to keep it straight and if you don't it will return to full chock left within 10-15 seconds.

Next, it acts like it is under a load at idle. Sometimes worse than others. It does not have the power to pull itself in 3rd or 4th gear unless you move the hoe. Moving the hoe actually relieves the load and make the the engine run under less load, the opposite of way it should be. Leads me to believe the hydraulics are trying to deadhead somewhere or a relief valve is sticky. Please let me know what might be some possible solutions to these problems.

Sounds like the steering valve is not centering and is holding left pressure at all times. That would cause the labor at idle also. Does the wheel turn much easier left than right when stopped? Or will it self turn left when stopped?

I do not believe the steering valve is causing the engine to labor. It does not turn harder one way or the other, it turns easily both directions actually. It will turn the wheels to the left constantly and at the same rate. It is pretty easy to keep straight if you steer to the right at the same pace it trys to steer to the left. Its not a big deal, its just really annoying.

Left hand brake is dragging?
Some kind of obstruction in the hydraulic return line?

Definately not a brake issue, although the brakes also need attention. It is steering related, it will completely turn the wheels to the left when stopped, although the steering wheel stays put.

The engine laboring at idle is a bigger concern to me because I do not want to damage the pump, because it appears to be a new or rebuilt unit. It is painted green, and does not match the rest of the hoe. I guess its possible that something is not adjusted correctly but I am leaning towards a relief valve somewhere in the system because if you move the hoe attachment, the laboring engine actually idles up and does not labor anymore. I believe it relieves the pressure in the system when you move the hoe.

Hello,
a JD 410b has a "closed center" hyd system. so the main pump builds up too stand by pressure. not sure on the spec but it should be over 2000 psi then the pump destrokes and uses no engine power.so if you are laboring at an idle then you are using oil or you have a internal leak. I don't know the history of the machine. but there is a priotity valve that peels off oil for the steering than the rest goes to the BH and loader valves.
If there was a problem in the priorty valve or steering valve it could cause what you are discribing. from what you said about the steering I would start there. you could cap the supply line to the steering valve and see if the engine labors.
as far as no power in 3rd or 4th. that machine has a tourque converter so the oil quality and the filter and suction screen are very important. if you have any water or foaming of the oil you will have no power.
Good Luck Ed
