Well I done it now! I was going along fine when I started to hear the sound so I stopped the dozer and as I suspected it was dry of oil. I filled it up but too late it now has lost power and it has quite the knock. Damn thing I know its my fault for not checking and keeping an eye on it but I didn't realize it went thru oil that fast. I just changed it about 10hrs of use ago. Any ways I would really like to rebuild it. I figure a set of bearings and rings and gaskets are in the mix. Anybody rebuild one of these buda engins? can it be done with the engine in the dozer or does it need to come out? any tips or suggestions that might help. Thanks Tom

Does anyone have any info as to when the "Buda Engine Co" (Louisiana) was spun off Allis-Deutz-Agco???
Buda of Harvey, IL was bought by Allis in 53 or so; Allis was bought by Deutz in 85 (??) and Deutz went to Agco 1990(??)...
I don't find a company thumbnail on Buda's site, and various (undated) business index listings refer to it as a "small business"...
Any comments/info appreciated.

I've dealt with the Buda Company in Louisiana several times. The guy there told me that they actually manufacture many of the engine parts that AGCO presently sells. True or not, I'm not sure, but according to him there is a business relationship between Buda Engine Company and the Allis Gleaner Coporation (AGCO).

Somewhere along the line, I assume when AC went bankrupt, somebody bought what was left of those "Lanova Buda" diesels. How they later wound up in Louisiana, I have no idea.

JDe & BC: Many thxx for comments. That jibes with comments I found online ("small" mfg/engine parts business; one said only four employees, parts "made to order" but none were dated)...
I would guess they have a license or agreement to m"f"r engine parts for certain engines, something like Arrow Engine supporting some older Wauks. As JDe speculated, they probably got the spares inventory for the engines they support as part of the deal. It doesn"t sound like a very profitable operation.

i TRIED to buy some stock steel head gaskets from the "new" Buda Co. for my AC D17 Diesel...when they decided to answer the phone after a couple weeks of daily calls i couldnt get a straight answer out of them on delivery because they were supposedly out of stock...my best advice is steer clear...i coulda swore the office was in the back room of a beer joint or cafe by background noise.

Get ready for a surprise, as parts for that Buda 344 engine are very expensive. Besides the high price, it's not any different to work than any other diesel of that vintage. Buda Engine Co. is still in business in Louisiana.

Tom If it was me, the first thing I would do is pull the engine, turn it up side down and pull the pan and then rod caps and see how much damage has been done. We have several locals that rebuild chev V-8s to IH 466s and more. They know where to send the cranks for rebuild and get matched bearing sets, get sleeve and piston sets and get the manuals for rebuild. If you didn't spin any main bearings, the damage might not be too bad. Cranks can be rebuilt, bearings replaced ect and check the cam and bearings also. It wont take long to pull that small of an engine out and if you redo it, do it right. Bob ACHD21a
