I looked everything over like you explained on this Cat D4D 3304 engine. It's still running rough since I have not found the problem. I have the parts book, service manual, etc. and learned quite a bit. So far It seams #3 cylinder is not firing right. I have switched the injectors like I told you before. No Change. I rebuilt the Fuel transfer pump since it was leaking anyway. Thought maybe it wasnt getting enough fuel pressure. Even bought the tool to remove the injection pumps. I pulled the #3 injection pump and everything looks good to me. Nothing broke or missing. Even bought a new Fuel line for #3 injector. Am I barking up the wrong tree? I pulled the valve cover thinking there would be a broken spring. Nothing. The one thing I noticed is that there is a lot of white/blue smoke from the stack, and puffs of white smoke from the valve cover breather tube. Please help if you could. You have been a big help in the past.

Before pulling the injection pump barrel, I read the book and it said to put the rack in mid position. I did that and then pulled the barrel. I read posts here before that when putting them back in that if your not carefull, you can be one tooth off. Hopefully I'm not. Although I think it is smoking more now than before. This is a scroll type pump, not the sleeve metering type.
After doing this, I'm begining to think it is in the compression end not the fuel end like you said. Maybe now alot more fuel unburned than before i played with the injection pump. I want to call a service guy, but the father-in-law is on limited funds and wants it fixed for as little as possible. hard to do when you are working on a Cat. Every part practicly has to come from the dealer.
He told me this dozer did this before, but only for a short time. After it warmed up it ran smooth.

It is very trickey to get the barrel and plunger back in right if you don't have the thimble micrometer to zero the rack. Here is what you could try if you have a vernier chaliper to measure in 0.001"'s At the front end of the fuel injection pump is a small diamond shaped cover over the bore for the rack. Take it off and look inside, you will see the end surface of the fuel pump and the rack. You need some one to help you hold the rack in position as you reinstall the barrel and plunger. Center the sector gear as before and hold the rack so it protrudes 0.155" out past the end of the pump housing. Not a fun job but I think you can do it. First measure from the surface the cover sits on to the end of the pump housing subtract 0.155" and set the deapth gauge to that. Then you need to release the pin that limits the rack untill you have oil pressure so the rack can move to zero. To do this you take out a small plug 3/8 or 5/16 hex app on the bottom side of the governor. This plug has a hole behind it that you can push a piece of brazing rod or small welding rod up and release the rack stop. When you do this the rack will come out past the end of the fuel pump housing as you open the throttle. Try to get this right first so you don't wash down the cyl and make things worse. I agree with you on the compression.

Ouch!!! Puffs from the breather??? and white puffs from the stack???
Run the engine with the valve cover off and see if the puffs that come out the breather are concentrated around any cyl(mainly#3) and crack #3 fuel line and see if the puffs from the stack go away. Try this and come on back tomorrow if you can. One more thing, did you zero the rack when taking out and installing the injection pump barrel and plunger?

Well, got back into the d4d today. First I got it started and cracked the fuel line to #3 to see if the smoke cleared. Really couldn't tell if there was a difference. Then I took the valve cover off and fired it up. Nothing there that would indicate a valve guide. So, shut it back down put everthing back together and took the fuel line off #3 cylinder and set it up so the fuel line would pump into a jug. Definately pumping fuel, the smoke cleared, and engine sounds smoother. After talking with the local engine shop,the next test is going to be pulling #3 injector, loosening rockers on#3 cylinder so the valves stay closed, and apply air pressure with a air compressor to see if I have a broken valve or just a worn cylinder or bad rings. I'm guessing it needs an overhaul because the hour meter is reading almost 11,000 hrs. and not sure if anything has ever been done to this engine before. Now the father-in-law wants to sell it.

Had a similar problem with my Cat955H. Started out as little until it became a dead miss. Turned out to be water/coolant leaking into that cylinder around the injector. I know its not the same engine but it sounds like a similar problem.
