I have a Allis HD6 and the track is worn. I am just using this machine on the farm and was curious if you can weld up the edge or ad a bar to the track to add traction. I feel that I am a good welder and have access to a varity of rod from inconnel to 7018 so the hardness of the weld is not an issue. What do ya think? My fear is to crack the pads due to heat. Thanks Tom

It is standard practice to weld on new grouser bar on all size of dozers, there is bar made specially for doing so,have no fear of the pads cracking as they are made from very good material, new grouser bar gets welded to big dozers ripping rock and it stands up to the job,you need a decent welding machine, you can use either stick or wire, the ground cable should be on the pad you are welding on.

Most steel supply houses know whstyou need. 3/4 square stock and use a 5/16 7018 rod and run it hot. get both trck off the ground soyou can turn them
I bought a cheap electric winch at Northern Hydraulics and set at the back of the tractor and weld 3 or 4 bars then turn the track with the winch. 2 dys work
be sure and weld the ends as well as the sides

Thanks guys! I thought that it could be done but was not 100% sure. Sounds like a good winter project.

I used the bar to weld on, then ran a bead of hard rod across the edge to keep the bar from wearing. Disconnect the engine ground wire when welding. A bad welding lead ground can cause an arc across the crankshaft bearings & ruin the engine.

Get real grouser bar. There is so much labor involved you don't want to scrimp on steel. It is not real expensive anyway.

It comes in defferent sizes. Get the size that will bring yours up to original specs. I let aguy talk me in to using a bigger size on my D4 and it tears up the yard too much.

Jack up one side and you can weld 2 or 3 on the front and 2 or 3 on the back and then turn the track with a bar. Go at it with 7018. If you use the right size rod you can make one pass on each side. Be sure and weld the ends up good and fill all curves. I trim the ends to a nice bevel with a torch.

You will get a lot of welding practice, it is well worth the trouble, particularly for dozing.

By edge if you mean the grousers they are built up often, either by welding a bar on or just weld buildup
