I'm helping a friend on a 1970's Dynahoe 190. The tractor wont move forward or reverse until some new tranny fluid is added. Then it will drive for about 15 minutes then stops. The shuttle shift strainer has been cleaned and always has more clutch lining than usual. Can I still get parts for this torque converter? and where can I find them. Any help would be great. My next step is to remove the torque converter for repair, unless someone knows some other things I should be looking at first. Thanks Dennis

I'm no powershift or Dynahoe expert, but I've learned a little over the last few years, so I'll give it a shot. First, the problem may not be your converter, it may be your hydraulically actuated clutch pack and/or the transmission oil pump and/or the transmission oil pump's pressure regulator and/or a clogged circuit (blocked filter(s) etc) and/or an air leak in the oil pickup tube. If you consistently have a lot of clutch lining in your strainer, then that shows that the clutch pack is probably slipping, which again can be caused by the pump or pressure regulator not applying enough pressure to keep the clutch pack locked up. Or the clutchpack's rubber seals have deteriorated so that it doesn't hold pressure and is not clamping down on the clutch discs with sufficient force.

Really you need a manual to troubleshoot this properly. Do you have a transmission oil pressure gage on the dash (that works)? If so make sure it is providing enough pressure for the transmission to function properly. There are pressure taps on the transmission that you can connect pressure gages to and gage the internal pressures coming from the pump and regulator. Your manual should tell you what pressure readings are normal at certain power settings and gear positions. Also there should be more than just one filter on the transmission. Mine has three: (1) suction, (2) safety (exactly like suction) and (3) high pressure filter (replaceable paper cartridge). Obviously you want to make sure all of these filters are ok too (if it has them).

If you don't have a manual, you can probably find them on ebay, that's where I got all mine. Hope this helps some, good luck.
