The cause of this is the heat absorbed by the vaporizing fuel. When the manifold is not yet warmed up, the cooling effect of the vaporizing fuel can cause the water in the air to freeze on the outside and the inside of the intake manifold, restricting it. The problem is worst on warm days in the winter, when the air is cool and moist. The solution is to allow the tractor to come up to full temperature before using it. Also, the problem is made worse by the increasing presence of ethanol in pump gas and by water absorbtion products like "heet" and "stabil," since these contain alcohols which have a much greater heat of voporization than gasoline. It also helps to have a good thermometer installed in your tractor. Additionally, be sure to wait until the engine is fully warmed up before tuning the carburetor. Otherwise you may tune the carburetor rich, which will make the problem worse. |
