Was looking at Neb tractor test results as listed in the book Full Steam Ahead by Erb and Brumbaugh. The LA on gasoline shows about 51 drawbar HP and the 500 diesel shows about 47 drawbar HP.Is that factual or possibly a printing error. If it's factual, I am surprised. Ron

| About 1970 we traded an LA for a 500. The 500 pulled the same cultivator with 2 spikes added and at a faster pace. It would do the same acerage in about 20% less time and cost about half for fuel. My brother still has the 500 and I'm restoring an LA. Maybe we can match them up some time!

| Standard bore on an LA is 4 5/8". There were aftermarket of 4 3/4" and 4 7/8" that I know of.
My 49' is a gas engine with the 4 3/4" pistons and high comp. head. I very seldom get beat in a pull be it percentage or distance.

| Lamont, I think the pistons in my LA are 3 3/4" which puts it at 425cu. It pulls a 5 bottom plow well in our clay. I was disking last fall with a 16' disk in 2nd all day long. It's not too bad on gas either. It's been running that way for the last 30-40 years with no crank damage, and never seen or heard of one breaking on an overbored engine either! Have you ever looked in the crankcase as an LA crank??? There is a local puller who is in his 80's now that still pulls a L with around 500cu 4 cylinder engine. He has big combine tires on the back and it's still crank start.

| LA on propane with high compression head would eat up a 900 diesel. Overbore pistons would break the LA crank.

| not sure if it mattered but maybe our elevation took a little less stress on cranks as I have never seen one fail with over boress here, many of them ran 10-15 years after being installed we re 4500-5500 feet though

| | I may have found my answer. Just looked again and see that the Pounds of Pull is considerably larger for the 500 over the LA. That would lead me to believe that book has some errors in data.

| Ron the LA could have showed more ponies due to it being a 403 cubed engine versa's the 500's 377 cubes but the dsl still should have made more torque I have seen LA's with over bore kits flat run away from 930's but they DRANK gas but pull and put out HP they did just my thoughts cnt

| Lamont it has been 40 plus years since I seen those LA's at work and I do not remember the excate size I do remember they were M&W add-a- power units sorry cnt
