Ok you Casers. This is on a recently acquired tractor that I have no history on. The seal around my PTO shaft is leaky. Some kind of soft rubber or cork around metal. How does it come out. I tried pulling the entire plate out but it seems to be attached to the shaft somehow. It won"t come off. Looking at the book it looks like some special tools may be required to take off the shaft, and I hate to do this just to remove this seal. Can I remove the seal from the outside by just destroying it and then put a new one on with a ball-ping hammer? Or does it have to be installed from the inside? Also, I notice that I can"t easily turn my pto shaft. It requires a pipe wrench to turn it with considerable ummph. I have the pto lever un-engaged. Have I got BIG problems?...slim

I recently replaced my pto and axle seal on my 830. I drilled two holes on opposing sides of the seal then threaded skrews into them and pulled the seal out with a vise grips and pry bar. Worked as slick as pledge on a lanolium floor! Austin

Try to engage your lever just a tad and see if that will allow you to move the shaft.

Are you thinking the PTO brake is still working well?

You say you looked in your book{a service manual?}The clutch sounds as if it is still engaged, not by design but perhaps locked up.On the right side of the transmission housing there is a pipe plug when removed allows you to adjust the clutch .Once its freed up, you should have room to bring that pto cover out a bit.Im not sure ,but there should be a snap ring to remove allowing you complete removal of the cover and shaft.Im not an expert by any means but Thats how I see it from this end. Got a parts book? They are invaluable as far as showing exploded views. chuck

That piece you have unbolted is a "seal carrier". It can be difficult to remove. There is an o ring behind it. The seal can be removed by stabbing it & prying it out. The reason you can't turn the shaft is because when not in use, there is a brake applied to keep the shaft from turning. Or, worse case, the brake is wore out, & the plates are warped.

John, the little oil seal that is leaking around the shaft--can I just pry it out from the outside, destroying it, and then replace it?...slim

Thanks, Fellas. Austin, do you remember where you got the new oil seal replacement. I'm getting quite an inventory from the catalogs of wrong sizes. I removed the one from the tractor and I'm sizing it and trying to replace it. I've finally broken down and ordered a parts manual to help me thru some of these messes I get into...slim
