At the age of about 5 or 6 I was promoted from the lawn mower and four wheeler to the 500b, only drove it from the hay elevator to the shed but it sure made my day! I was 8 when I got to chisel plow with the 7120 and a 7 shank Heston, dad made the first round so I didn't catch any stumps or branches, supervised for another round then turned me loose untill it was time for chores. I bought it and fixed it up plowed my garden with a two bottom john deere trip plow. Now it's sold to a guy 2 hrs away when I traded it for a 1955 400 supper diesel last week Yeah I guess when other teens are buying video game I'm buying tractors it may cost a little more but I'd take it any day ! By 11 years old I was running 700 standard diesel hauling manure, 930 row crop pulling chopper boxes, and all the SC and DC"s moving feed wagons. Of course runnin the 990DB with loader or the 1845? Skid steer was the best treat. I view myself as on the younger side at 35 and wonder why no-one would consider putting a kid under 16 on a tractor anymore....very few of us would have any stories. Bout 8 years old, didn't do the best at first, but Dad was very patient, as he was stacking on the flat rack. What a baler, to leave a memory. I that it blew a head around 1972, when it would not start after dinner, using either and a huge electic drill , with a homemade thing to fit the crankshaft receiver. Got a New Holland 68 pto driven after that. Just hauled the ole 77 to scrap last year, had a big tree growin in it. The money helped with the tile fund. Hated to see it go. Don L. [Reply]  [No Email]

At that time I was only 5 years old, in a large paddock (Field) containing 90 acres. 30 chains x 30 chains square. I still remeber that day very vividly, have been a true CASE nutter ever since. I am now 77 years old. I was to found the Case & Vintage Farm Machinery Club of (N.Z ) Inc away back in March 1968. which is still going strong today. It was our 2590 running the chisel plow in summer fallow dad would make the first round so i wouldnt hit any neighboring crops then set me loose. we still have that tractor and i used it the last two years to pull my 1850/787 airseeder. My left leg had to be long enough to push the foot clutch pedal while sitting on the edge of the seat. Actually started driving at 5 or 6 on a '23 1 ton Model T truck. Nobody will believe this but I was 4 years old (almost 5) and my sister was gone so my Dad put me on the D for baling. It sounds crazy now, but that was when my love for Case started. Then dad's 430, and eventually plowing with a 930 and a JR 5x16s by about 10. Great memories of getting to "drive" grandpa's tractor, and a few years later getting home from school and plowing until bedtime. It was amazing to me to shut the lights off when plowing with the 930 after dark and watch fire coming out of the exhaust, and the manifold glowing red..... Great memories. [Reply]  [No Email]

First Case would've been the 970 about that 8-10 range. When I was 10 I ran the 2390 working ground by myself while dad planted with the 970. My grandpa bought the H new in 1950 and my Dad bought the 970 in 1974, it was two years old and then he bought the 2390 new in Feb 1980 for $33k. We still have the H & 2390. [Reply]  [No Email]

The first time behind the wheel was with my uncle in the 1070. I don't know how old I was, but I was old enough to be driving the smaller tractors by myself. At the time the 1070 was our "big" tractor, so I though driving it was the greatest thing. We were driving across a farm he rented after harvest and he taught me to drive down the rows of picked corn with out running over stalks. I had a heck of a time with that since I kept looking down at the front tire instead of straight ahead. That farm had a rickety old bridge across a ditch that was kinda narrow. Made me nervous as heck to cross it, but told me to keep driving and not worry about it. Learned a lot that day. [Reply]  [No Email]

I was well experienced on a 9N and D4 but was never allowed to run the two LA Cases we farmed with. I own one of the tractors now plus two others. Someday I plan on getting one to run again. In 1971, I went with my my dad from WV to Columbus, Ohio to pick it up. I remember being a little disappointed when I first saw it. I had no idea what a VAC looked like prior to seeing it. On our way back home, I remember saying to my dad as we passed by a Case Dealer in Columbus, "I wish our Case Tractor looked like that one", as I pointed to a Black Knight tractor parked in front of the dealership. Said dont run the rake into anything like the rock piles or an REA pole. I lasted about a week and miss judged one REA pole and bent the front wheel of the rake. The custom rake had the front wheel literally straight to my right, not behind me at all and I didnt want to miss any hay because that resulted in a butt chewing and didnt want to hit the pole because that was a butt chewing. I guess I picked the latter. Loved raking with that thing, open air, choice to fold up the seat and stand, and just the hum of ol' Smokey Joe. [Reply]  [No Email]

Came to Iowa to visit the wife's folks and ended up discing plowed ground. Never been on a tractor before. I was 19 years old and never left the farm after that. Was 21, when dad and my uncle rowcropped they run Allis. Can still recall many days and nights on a D17 working ground. Dad said they had used about every brand in the early years farming. I know I wasn't big enough to pull the clutch back, so I drove it with my foot up against the clutch lever. I know I mowed raked and loose stacked all of the alfalfa, when I was in the second grade. Dad had put a faster steering gear on it when he put it on rubber . It would cramp on the turns and it took a man to straighten it. On the first turn it cramped and I just went round and around. Oh yea I was pulling a 12" JD rod weeder. Dad had to run up a 1/2 mi to get on and straignten it out. I had to wait a year until I was 13 when he bought a new 1948 LA. I than worked all day long. Phelps, 01-08-2013 16:49:53   Jimmie, I turned too short with the L and the rear tire hooked the outside cable of the evener draw bar up over It and bent the fender. OOPS. The clutch lever was backwards on the L so when I pulled back on the lever, it lurched and I could snap it over center. It was pretty easy to disingage. All I had to do was put both hands on the steering wheel and put my foot against the lever and give it a kick. Loren [Reply]  [No Email]

Drove it pulling the rock wagon while the older brothers and sisters and dad picked. Don't know how old I was, but I couldn't reach the clutch and shift at the same time so dad or one of my brothers would do it. First tractor I drove alone was a ford jubilee pulling wagons and following my dad around the field while he combined with the 830 and 77 combine. I also raked hay that year. The same year I started driving the 830 pulling the 200 baler while dad stacked on the wagon. I was 7 or 8 that year, so that would have been 68 or 69. [Reply]  [No Email]
