Currently running a 55 series Deere on the feed wagon year round. Have a guy that wants to buy it, so that means finding a replacement. I have had fun working with my 870 gasser, so I was thinking of looking for another Case w/ cab & diesel for feed duty. What do ya think the best model would be? 8 speed manual tranny?

More info......need at least 80hp, closed center hyds, like to stay $10-12k range but may go higher. If my 870 had a cab, I would use it, though I"m not sure how the 12speed would like cold weather!

We have used our 2090 on the TMR and to works great. The power shift is handy for adjusting speed and for quickly switching between forward and reverse when feeding. As for the cold weather, it starts and shifts good. Our 1070 with a 12 speed doesn't always work well at first, but it handles the cold if you let it warm up. I agree with the guys mentioning the 94/96 series though. They would be a better tractor, but a 2090 is your best option in that price range.

If you need closed center, that rules out everything except 90,94 and 96 series.

If in your shoes, and needing something reliable every day, I might look at something in the 94 or 96 series (1594/1694 or even 1896). The improvements and refinements that were made from the early 70 series to 94-96 series would be desirable. If you could stretch into the low $20k level a 5120 or 5130 would be excellent.

Buy an 870 or 970. power shift is fine in the cold, just give them 5-10 minutes before shifting up. They are great starters and fuel efficient, good pto and hyd. Just don't let them sit running the pto while shift is in reverse. Big no no and they have warnings right by the pto. In the 90 series a 2090 would work good too, but they are 100 hp. A 1896 or 2096 would also be good and some are still in your price range.
