Posting for a buddy who has a 400 diesel where he can't engage 3rd gear. He was at a plow day and could only get it in reverse or the gear to the right of 3rd.We played with it again a couple days later and after a lot of screwing around I got it to go into 3rd. It seems a lot of things need to be in alignment for it to work. I am guessing the shifter forks are bent worn or broke. Appreciate any info you may have before we take the cover off |

| Most likely it's not the forks, but the shifting tower held in w/ 2 studs at the bottom of the shift lever. I spent 3 hours on mine last week, but made it like new. The original guides have a 5/16" shaft. I bought 2 pins from a truck supply house with a 3/8 shaft. The shafts rest in the tower & mine were wore, so I drilled them out to 3/8" & snugged them up. Also the slots in the ball were wore, so I brazed them up some & filed them back. took a lot of time, but turned out well. |

| Mine was a pita to shift because the square pegs that guide the shifter and their mating slots were worn bad allowing the shifter to twist instead of move. 2 bolts and the shifters out. link_disallowed makes oversize pins to repair worn shifters. |
