If you remove the water pump on a 188 diesel, there is supposed to be a bolt that screws into the head. Well my engine doesnt have the bolt in the hole. And it doesnt appear that it has ever had one. My question is would this allow coolant to bypass? Should I put one in it? |

| If you have a hole in the back of the timing cover and the head has a threaded hole in it by all means put a 7/16" capscrew with a 3/16" hole drilled in the center, which was as stated, a bypass. If the capscrew is not in there coolant can make it's way to the crankcase via the timing gear cover. Loren PS I believe the head of the capscrew was shaved down to allow clearance for the impeller on the water pump, so make sure the pump turns freely after installed. |

| It was a drilled bolt, and it was a bypass. I don"t think the later engines had the hole for the bolt. |
