I am working on a David Brown 3800 gas for a friend. Is the transmission oil and the hydraulic oil the same as in a Ford 8N. What kind of oil does it use? |

Is it a 6 speed or a 12? If a 12, 3 sticks or 2?
The 3800 is simply a Gas powered 780, Case has no listing for a 3800 in their parts books. Ignition parts are for a 6 cylinder GM of the era.
The "lots of adjustment for lift control" is the selectamatic system. DB was doing computer age stuff with cables, levers, and valving.
Also since you are doing fixing up the hydraulics, make sure the rubber boots on the gearshift levers are good. Torn ones will let water into the gearbox. |

| It is a six speed and the rubber boot are bad. Any suggestions on a supplier for the shifter boots? |

| Thanks for the advice! I've never seen a David Brown before this one. This tractor has a lot of adjustment for lift control and a hight/low range transmission. |

| In my opinion, motor oil works best in DB selectamatics(entrained air). I run 15W40 in mine. 10W30 if you use it a lot in the winter, maybe 20-50 if you are in Florida or Texas. Universal Trans-Hydraulic, Hytran, or any similar fluid should be OK too.
As I recall the "N"s use a heavy 80 or 90 wt oil in their back end. Not at all suitable for the DB.
Hydraulic and trans are the same fluid. While you it drained, change the filter under the belly, and clean the screen. If it is a very early one you might just have the screen.
It will take 5-6 gallons. Not many 3800s were built kinda a rare bird. |
