when i had the injector pump off my 188D i was trying to figure out how to get the drive shaft out of the tractor, i was pushing and pulling and trying to turn it. felt like there is a big spring inside the timeing cover holding it in so i gave up. is it possible that i jumped the timeing one tooth while i was monkeying with it. now that it is back together is won't start and is smoking a lot when i roll it over. |

| There is one dot on one gear and two on the other and you put the one between the other two, but there isnt any marks on the housing to line up with. So it wont do much good other than seeing if you did get the pump gear a tooth off. The marks on the pump are gona need to be verified. |

| problem with that is when i rebuilt the inj pump i replaced the governor weight retainer and scribed my mark into it when i put it back on the engine so the mark inside the pump could be wrong. unless i take the pump back apart and put the old EID drive back into it.
if i take the cover off the front of the timeing gears will there be punch marks that line up when at TDC like on a car's timeing gears? |

| This is what I would do. 1) remove the valve cover 2) remove the timing mark cover on the bell housing. 3) remove the the little cover on the side of the inj pump. 4) turn the engine over(in the direction of rotation) until the intake valve opens and closes 5)continue turning the engine (by hand) while looking at the timing pointer on the bell housing. 6) align pointer with 8 dbtc mark 7) then look at the window on the inj pump, they should be aligned.I havent had one that would start being 1 tooth off, but it will start and smoke like crazy 180 deg off. If you steps 1-6 and the pump is off, remove it, turn it till the marks are lined up and try to reinstall it. If the pump drive is one tooth off u will know it. |
