I've heard you need at least 75 HP to run a round baler. Not sure how far you could go back and find a Case with enough horsepower to run one?

I use a 54 DC4 and a Geil 1600 5X6 does just fine untill the bale is full and the hill is to steep

I use my Racine 400 diesel with an 851 NH round baler. It makes a 6x6 bale. I tend to go 6x5 as it gets a bit luggy toward the end. I only have trouble in really light windrows, it tends to pack to tight and get a little tough to spin. I make around 150 bales a year.

Thanks for the replys. I figured someone on here would have ran one with a 500 or 600 wheatland type tractor.

I still use my 410. It works just fine. On a thicker windrow, on rare occasion, it will bunch up. But it hasn't happened enough for me to put something else on it. If the power requirement was 75 hp, I would think it is due to a hill pushing a "lighter" tractor around. I have some hills, and have had no problem with our current round baler.

I bale with a Hesston 5500 5x5 and my biggest tractor- a DB 990. I've run it with an 800 Ford too and even with my Cockshutt 30 in low range. It's not fast, but it got me by. I have an 811B but the PTO pack is pretty shot, I'm sure it would run it though.

made about 500 round bales so far this year with the ol" 401. It makes a pretty nice bale, pretty efficient too.

My dad baled with a Model 850 new holland baler and an 800 case that had a wide front end and a front end loader.

He even baled some hillside stuff but was careful how he did it.

He did use my 930 diesel at times but it was more than enough tractor for the 850 baler.

Today i use the same baler but on my 1370.

The baler is a 540 PTO but i run real slow with the 1000 RPM and knock on wood i'm ok so far.

Sorry pictures didn't work out, couldn't get into photobucket for some reason, so I transfered a picture of the 900 and 1030, that I posted on tractor photos a few years back. Don't have many pictures of either tractor.

Dad bought an 851 new holland new in 81, he only had two big tractors at the time, a 900 case and G1000 vista MM. The vista was on the 96 pull type john deere combine at harvest, so he used the 900 on the baler. In 1982 the 900 was replaced with a 1030 case. I never ran the 900 on the baler, but it seemed to work fine, just a little dirtier, beacause the back of the cab was right by the baler. I was 11 when we got the 1030, dad decided I was old enough to run the baler, got along good with the 1030.

Knew an older fellow who baled hay for years with an LA and a 605C Vermeer baler. I don't remember exactly why, but I know he had to get off the tractor and do something with either the hydraulics or the pto on every bale he made.

Pops 51 DC will run a 846 nh baler ,, it dont mind it much till ya get on a hill with a full bale,, then it gets fussing with the governor ,,brother had a 850 nh we put behind ol Pops DC ,,,. just to see if it could do it .small field /job .we only had 3 bales to make ,,, the ol gent baled them, but had to finish the bale in 1st gear...never gonna do that to the DC again ,,my 800 and 730 gasser can run the 846 nh,easy enuf , but i choose to bale with the 4020 power/shift. I like the ease and wide range of gear shiftin..what was mother deer thinkin when they went to quad range??? . my worn out 930 handles the 850 easier than the pristine prissy deer ,, btw , Pops 430 demonstratordiesel has run the 850nh,, for a demo ,, not a very good idea ,, but that little 430 made a bale ..

930 Western Special 6 speed with hand clutch went thru 4, 5x6 balers all hestons before moving up to a 956 baler and the 930 would only handle it on flat dry land which we don't have much of, replaced the Case with a 6290MF.

We used a 730 diesel, but it was with a new holland 850 chain type baler and they don't take as much hp as the new balers.
