Was reading through some other posts and on one, the antifreeze is blowing out of the raditator cap. Several of the responses talk about "cavitation" and proper antifreeze and using a conditioner. I have never heard of this in my life, but according to the posts, it seems quite common. Could someone please explain what they mean by cavitation in regard to the antifreeze in diesel engines. I have two diesel Case tractors, (530 and 730) and we've always used regular antifreeze and never had any problems. But then, we're in Central Florida. |

Last winter I overhauled a "730" non-turbo and it had pitting on the sleevs just above the o-rings. Gary

I have seen it too on non-turbo tractors. I had a 766 IH with a water filter that was very bad.

I agree with the guys also. Also as important as the cavitaion protection, is the coolant conditioning the o-rings on the sleeves from becoming hard and brittle. I have OH'ed to many good running tractors just because of leaking sleeve o-rings.

Caviation began to be a problem in Diesel engines when torbos began to appear.Turbos by forcing more air into cylinder more fuel could be introduced an as result sleves were working under much higher pressures. So much pressure that they were flexing a smaall amount during power stroke. This very sudden flex an return caused a split second vacium between water an sleve (bubble)an along with any foreign material in antifreeze acted as a blasting material an eventually would cause hole in sleve.Usually this nappened on one distince area such as along path of wrist pin. Different areas on different engines.Origional fix was for filter that filtered water an conditioner to keep colant at proper chemical condition.Your 730 same as our 830 was not turbocharged an never had sleve trouble. But 2390 even though we read an new we should have put filter on we waited too long.

Thats a great explaination of cavitation and I totally agree. Certainly the higher HP turbo tractors seemed most affected. In our area 870's and 966's also could produce that problem if they had a poorly maintained cooling system. Rod

Thanks for the excellent replies, now I understand. But where do I get this "conditioner" for my antifreeze?
