Greenfrog 07-29-2010 07:10:00 206.71.202.146 158682 Report to Moderator	I have CASE SC and DC. Seems like 6volt batteries are not as good as use to be. (I keep a little trickle charger on them at times) The antiques sit a lot, but seems like they need a little more "umph" when it comes to cranking. Can I put in an 8 volt Battery? Will it effect the electrical parts---the generator, voltage regulator, ignition, lights....? [Reply]   [Send Email]

If your tractor is in a good tuned up condition you only need a 6 volt. Don't matter if it old or new style. What are you going to do in a couple of years when 8 volt isn't enough? One of the most important things is to have a heavy duty 6v cable. Do not try using a 12v cable. The 12v does not have as many wires as the 6v does. Power = current x voltage. If the voltage is 1/2 then the amps is going to be twice as much. Hugh always recommended using 0 or 00 gauge wires. I have had a 6v battery in one of my C's for at least 4 years. It doesn't get used much but enough to keep the battery charged. No problem spinning the starter. I am not saying anything against converting to 8v. You may have to replace the light bulbs with 12v bulbs. A friend did this on his Super H and the first time that he turned the lights on they blew. Each system is a little different. The manufacture of batteries is different for different classes of batteries. Sometimes a cheaper battery is exactly what you get, not always. Many factors involved.   [Reply]   [Send Email]

Just have the VR tweaked to put added charge back into batt from the gennny . I'v used 8 v for 10 yrs now in my tractors . Only replaced ( 1 ) headlite bulb in that time . HTH ! You will find that the battery of today is a plate or two less than years ago. Yes, you can use an 8 volt and it will work much better and crank it over. The charging system will work since it olny has a cut out on the generator and the lights will also work. I run 20 tractors on 6 volt systems during harvest and I have special orderd 6 volt batterys with the full amount of plates in the past. The manufacture would not do it the last few years because the batterys with the full amount of plates lasted 6 years!   [Reply]   [No Email]
