1952 case sc hand clutch (FFA restoration project) - when clutch engaged and belt pulley spins there is a gear rollover, "howling" noise. Every bearing and race has been replaced on the transmission and we shimmed .080". Also, when you spin the pulley by hand when tractor is not running, it feels very rough. Any suggestions???

Hello, I ran my Dad's 41' SC when I was a kid and had a '44 SC for serveral years. I did not have any transmission issues but I can share that normally (at least on the older style) the belt pulley should feel very, very smooth when you spin it by hand. If it is rough without the clutch engaged problem is most likely in the pulley shaft. Is there any play or bind in that shaft when not engaged? If that is smooth until you engage the clutch then there may be clutch/transmission issues. Also, it the gear case full of transmission oil? It will hold nearly ten gallons and it must be filled almost completely full (to the top fill hole). This leaves just enough room for expansion. The gears and shafts in the SC are near the top of the gear case, not the bottom. I ran 85W130 in mine but had a little trouble with seal weeping using the multi viscosity lube (I used this tractor in the wintertime). A slight whine, especially in 4th gear is normal for this transmission. Best of luck with your project.

Ok, I spent all day today trying to problem solve and made no progress. each bearing has the correct amount of end play, and the pinion gear on the lower mainshaft has proper backlash. We increased the backlash a little and it made no difference. I am beginning to think this problem lies with the clutch area. Would the throwout bearing be making this noise? O rwhat about the bearing inside the input shaft? Any thoughts?

Thanks,
-Lance

Did you check the end play on the pulley shaft it should be around .001 to.002. If it is to tight it will preload the bearings and they will get hot when running and if it is to loose it will cause uneven bearing wear and even some noise. I am in the process of putting the trans mission back togrther on my 49 SC and have set all of the shaft end plays at .002. I have not heard it run yet but that should be the right clearence on most shafts were tapered roller bearings are used. Hope this helps KYCASE1

I believe there is a bearing on the belt pulley. It is likely bad.

Yes there are two mainshafts on te transmission and each has two tapered bearings. I just remembered when I was putting the new bearing on this parlicular shaft, I messed up the cage and tried to fix it, guess I didnt do much good. I will pull it off in a little bit.

Thanks,
Lance

The throw out bearing and the clutch shaft bearing both could cause noise even the pilot bearing in the flywheel could cause noise. One thing you have to remember, the transmissions in these old tractors were inherently louder compared to today"s standards. Specialty after 55 or 60 years of run time. Some of these old tractors after setting for a long period of time even if they were setting inside would develop rust and pitting on the gears which will also cause noise. Keep us posted on what you find. KYCASE1

Yeah everybody I have talked to, seems to think the problem lies in the input shaft bearing, mostly because the noise is present even in neutral. We were supposed to paint today, but it looks like we are going to have to split it. Our show starts on the 19th!!! Thanks,Lance

Ok after splitting the tractor twice in one night, we finally found the problem hanging up on the shop wall. I forgot to put the shims on the input shaft? clutch shaft and afterthose were installed, It was like glass. Tractor is in paint booth. Thanks
