I was just visiting with a fellow tonight who has a 530 diesel. He likes it very much, but just got done putting a new crankshaft in it. He says he's had three 530 diesels over the years and broke three crankshafts. Does this sound reasonable? Thanks, Glenn F. |

| I know one way to break a crankshaft is to spray starting fluid in the motor prior to turning it over. This has broken crankshafts in Detroit Diesel engines. The engine should be in motion prior to spraying the starting fluid near the intake. |

| I have worked with the 188 diesel and later the 207. This engine was the same in all equipment that used it except for fuel settings and rpm's. There were design changes in sleeve counterbore diameter to cure a sleeve recession problem early but the basic engine remained the same till the into of the CDC (cummins). Our dealership sold literally hundreds of these engines in everything from the 430's-630's on the ag side and in the famous Case backhoes through the 580B's and 350-450 crawlers and many more pieces that used it. As with any series , when you sell that many you will occasionally see some failures. The 188 was no more or less prone to breaking cranks than any other engine. The 70 series big block engine as used in the 970-1175 was a great engine also and occasionally they will break a crank. I would not pass up a 530 diesel worrying about breaking cranks. mEl |

| Doesn't sound right to me. I have owned 4 tractors (430s and 530s) and put many many hours on them. Never had any problems. the 188 diesel is a good little engine. I wonder what he is doing to break crankshafts. |

| | There are some folks that are hard on equipment. I would bet this fellow is always replacing brakes, tires and other items on the cars and trucks he drives too. Poor operating habits, lack of regular maintenance, always buying worn out equipment and expecting to operate as new without requisite repairs, etc. are usually the culprit. As a child I had a younger cousin that always seemed to break some of my toys when he came to visit. He was also just as hard on his own toys. In later years his Dad (we were adults with kids of our own by then) even explained that he thought he could have given his son an anvil to play with in the morning and he would have torn it up by dark, some people are just like that. |

| | You kind to have had to have grown up with this kid. He had more energy than 10 people should have. Came to visit us at our NW Colorado ranch and by the tme he left our Border Collie (about 18 months old at the time) slept for a week. John had just run him ragged chasing all over the hills. Probably had a great time though. I was 16 then and I think John was maybe 12 or so. He actually turned out to be a very nice guy and good father (the mother's curse worked though because his two boys were just like him). |

| | Jim I am still laughing about the young lad wearing down a young border collie. I didn't think it possible to get the best of a 18 month-old border collie. Thanks of the chuckle - Joe |
