I bought a DC late summer. No room in the shed yet. It has a Case Mag. Moisture has been a problem b4. But I took the cap off, made sure it was dry inside, put on a new gasket. Still won't start. What procedures do I go thru to check out the mag. Its my only tractor w/mag so am inexpierienced thanks for you assistance...gobble |

| | check out this link... http://laanderud.com/case/magneto/index.html The manual tells you a lot about them. It also states to not take it completely apart unless you have a magnetic recharge capability (echoing someone's comments here). worth a read. And clean the points with very fine grit sandpaper, clean with paper and drop some rubbing alcohol on them to get the last bit of oil off them. Clean is critical... Hope this helps. Ken in AZ |

| Hi Tom, It's happily sleeping in the shop until the budget will allow for new front tires and rims (definitely after Christmas). The steering arm looks like it will need to be swapped out yet too but I haven't measured for certain. So it's on the back burner for now. Life has offered a few surprises that are keeping me distracted. Running a business and raising kids... I am learning patience... Thanks! Ken in AZ |

| tomturkey ,Do not take it all apart,as others have suggested, unless you have the capabilities or recharge the internal magnetic field.Removing the rotor will cause it to loose magnetism, and make it inoperative.Clean the points with a piece of 600 or 1000-1500 grit wet or dry sandpaper.Reset the point gap at .020 I think. Then polish them with a dollar bill or a piece of typing paper. Check the cap inside for carbon arcs that will short out the spark.I have found that most of the time condensers hardly ever go bad. |

| Rub the points with some 320 wet or dry until shiny. If they're pitted I would replace them and take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean the new points. Make sure they're gapped at .010". Make sure the impulse coupling is making a snapping noise when cranking. Hal |

| Mags are touchy. The points need to be clean and set just right. The condensor is almost always a problem and should be replaced. Check the cap for hairline grounding lines and make sure everything is very clean. Post John Saeli for help, he usually has a rebuilt mag on the shelf. New caps & points are no longer made and hard to find. There are a lot of non-original condensors that will work. |
