when I moved the PS pump to the right side of the engine, I decided to replace the washers on each side of the fittings (yeah, I know I should have just disconnected the hoses). So I found some copper washers that were the same size. The didn't seal at all. Even before I started it they leaked. I retorqued them and they still leaked. Took it appart and put the old brass ones back in but flipped them around from the way the were installed. One stopped leaking but the other still is. ANy suggestions? Someone suggested heating the copper ones up to make them softer but I haven't tried that yet.

Other than that the old girl fired right up after sitting a year and being 1/2 dismantled.

THanks.

Is it possible you have bits of rust or other foreign materials on the sealing faces? I have used hand cut washers made from brass shim stock to hold pressures to 6,000 psi, but the sealing surfaces were clean clean clean. Also look to see if the sealing surafces are completly flat and not warpped or dented.

Heating the copper washers to red and quenching in water will anneal them to dead soft. Copper works exactly opposite that of steel on quenching. It's cold work that hardens it, like squeezing them in a joint or bending. Either brass or copper washers should work for you in this case, just make a few flatness and cleanliness checks. One working and one not tells me a very small piece of something may be sitting between a seal surface and the brass washer.

Cleaned everything but Now that I've thought about it a bit (didn't look at it yesterday) I kinda wonder if there is a bit of paint under the surface on the pump since I had repainted it. Will look again and clean the paint off.

Of course the leaking line is the pressure side.

Thanks for the help.
