This has probably been covered a million times but I can't find it. Some previous owner of my CASE VAC installed a 12 volt battery and lights. The original generator is still on it but doing nothing. Does anyone know of an alternator that will go on fairly easily. I would like to stay with the 12 volts but right now I have to charge the battery every few days. Thanks in advance for the help. |

| Send me an e-mail so I have yours, or give it to me on here and I'll try to get a pic or two this weekend. Read my previous post about the pulley. Shoot, I wish you'd said something a month ago, I had the top off. Just got it buttoned back up to plow snow this winter. |

| | Bob I have a small alternator that was on a tractor I bought last spring. It was removed during the restoration process because I wanted to get back as close to original as possible. The alternator checked out well by my local armature shop. You can have it for $50 plus shipping... - Joe

| The old chevy internally regulated alternators are popular for conversions. One of the best things about them is that the pulley from your generator (that runs the wide belt) will bolt right onto the front of those alternators. Throw the tin fan away, these engines turn so slow that you don"t need the cooling. Then just fabricate the brackets & do the wiring. You may even get away with using the original belt if you"re creative enough with the brackets. I"ve done my 311 and and 2 Internationals, and the alternators are tucked up tight against the engine, and the sheet metal goes on right over the top of them. Can"t even tell they"re converted unless you look close. |

Re: 12 volt conversion: actually, alternator on 311 in reply to Jeff B., 11-04-2009 18:07:53

| | Hi Jeff: I have a 311 and expect to need to change the charging system sometime. I have considered going to an alternator but didn't think there woud be room, especially if the side panels are mounted. But it sounds like there would be room. Would you be able/willing to post a couple of closeup pictures of how your brackets are shaped and mounted? Do you remember what belt is right? Did you have to change any pulleys? etc. THANKS for any follow-up help. Mark |

| Mark; You can buy one of those chevy altenators at a place like Auto Zone for about $40. with a single wire or two wire hook up. As for making the bracket you just have to look a where the generator was hooked on to, bolt holes and at the altenator and work at it. The pulley frome the generator will need to, and will fit, put on the altenator so the wide belt will work. take care, Roger |

| | Thanks for the reply. Guess I just have to actually measure in there instead of going by looks! And thanks for the belt/pulley info. Mark |
