Hi Guys,
Just finished installing new seals on the Bull gear pinion shaft/brake shaft of this Ol' girl. Also rebuilt the brakes for all the normal reasons. Now we're ready to flush and replace the Tranny/Diff oil but don't have an 830 COM operators manual.
But we do have a manual for our 800 COM which says, on page 35, to use 10W non-detergent oil in both the trans/dif (15 gal) and COM (4 gal)!
This sounds to me like 10W oil is too thin for a gearbox... Comments and/or confirmation please.

In my 800 series I run hytran in transmission and automatic transmission oil in COM such as dextron 2. Calls for type A in hydraulics but I been running hytran in hydraulics.

SAE 10W !! Come -on -guys!! Those directions were written over 40 years ago. 10W has no anti-foaming agents like the Hyd.-Trans. oils of today, & no "Extreme Pressure" Rating that a quality Tranny oil will have. I liked the older set-up CASE used where the Converter used Dexron or better, & the Tranny - Diff. used 85W140.

Per mEl, I am guessing Hy Tran Ultra is an automatic transmission fluid. Per the Case book our '63 830 used ATF, the red stuff. Oddly enough I had a 1976 Dodge pick up that used ATF in the differential. Drove it 100,000+ miles with no problem.

Hey Jim, want to buy a 61',831 COM? 500 bucks takes it home. A guy SW of me has one sitting in the pasture. Said the injection pump went bad, so he just parked it.

The recommended oil NOW by Case would be Hy Tran Ultra. Even TCH has been phased out in most applications except crawler trannys. You guys have taught me something on the #10 motor oil thing. mEl

I'v had an 830 Comfort King new 1966 and always used as per book ATF (the red stuff) one compartment everything behind the clutch. Never worn anything out. Took a 12 gallon drum. Use a bit more if working on hills.

I do not know what wt. the Hy Tran Ultra is. The old Hy Tran was a 10 wt. oil. Nothing wrong with a 10 wt. oil if it has the specs for the pressures that hydraulics need today. For a winter use, and light use in the summer it would be perfect. BUT if you are making a living with these 40 year old tractors like I am you will likely have problems. 40 year old hydraulic pumps with 10,000 hours on them are not as tight as they once were. One hours use on a 90 degree day lifting a cultivator, round baler door, or running a hydraulic motor on a bale accumulator and the oil is thinner than water. You will have trouble holding enough pressure. I have found that 20 wt hydraulic oil will stand up much better in the heat, but is not so thick that it causes trouble in the winter. It all depends on that you intend to use it for.
