As I was looking through the Case IH Parts lists for my 630 a few days ago comparing part numbers on my 1960 641 (630) to 500b/600b parts. It hit me that when I was replacing the very worn oil pump the lower front main bearimg fell out. I picked it up, washed it off thorougghly in clean gasoline and applied a light coating of bearing grease to lubricate during start up. Replacing the oil pump raised my oil pressure from about 3-5 psi at idle to 10-12 psi. My question is could I have put the bearing in backward and would that have any effect on communication holes or grooves and kept the pressure from coming up (I think it should be about 20 psi at idle)? At 3/4 throttle I only get about 12-15 psi now. Haven't worked her very hard, just idling or parade work so I am not real concerned, but I would like to start bush hogging with it. The rod bearings have been replaced but as near as I can tell the mains were not. Any dire consequences here for a little harder work or should I go ahead and replace the mains? I had planned to do this and a valve job as soon as I get my new shop finished so I have some room to work around the old girl.

J, the bearing shells have a locating tab that fits a groove in the cap. Had you installed it incorectly chances are you would have bound the engine and it would have turned hard, you would have known it. Does the pressure vary widely from idle to high idle with hot oil? If so the bearings could be letting it get away, if not the pump relief valve could be "jacked up" by adding washers under the relief valve spring to get the pressure where you need it. Also forgot to mention that I put a new spring and plunger in the "new" oil pump just for good measure before installing it.

Not a wide variation between hot and cold, as well at hot idle about 8-10 psi and 3/4-full throttle about 12-15 based on good 0-45 psi gauge from excess inventory we were throwing away at work several years ago. Gauge was new when I put it on to get a second check right at the block.

Good to know on the tab. It was just a thought on my part as someone else's problems on SC rebuild and one of the checks mentioned was on journal bearing orientation could obstruct passageway to galleries.

a bearing shouldn't fall out easily that indicates it is shrunk from running loose or warm from oil shortage, a loose insert is prone to spinning, I think I would roll new onew in

It was the bottom one that dropped off the crank, not the top one rolling out. It didn't come out with the pump but due to cold oil stuck to the crank for a few seconds.

I would get some plastic gage and check the clearence with that. I bought a 351 that at some point and time had the crank turned .010. And sometme later someone replaced the rod bearings with standard ones. I did not knock and held oil pressure. I caught the problem with plastic gage. I had to have the crank turned .020 mains and .030 rods

But can the bottom bearing half be put in backward? I believe that rod bearings can and that effects the oil path. The plastigauge was my next try.

Hey Jim, have you put a mic on the crank? It would be interesting to know what the journal diameters are. Your bearings should be marked std., 0.05, 0.10 or whatever.

FYI, I always put the bearing in the holder, then bolt it back together, that way you know for sure its not backwards.

Shaun, you're right, I put it on the oil pump and assembled it that way. I guess its in right since I could see it fit right on the pump. The pump is the cap on the front bearing.

Never really took note of the number on the bearing or micced the crank since I was so very sure it was the pump, and to some extent it was, it raised the pressure some 3-4 times so you can see how bad it was to start with.

It has been a couple years since I rebuilt the 351. We did mic it and checked the bearings to find the fault during a previous repair by previous owners.
