Hello! On my 730 Comfort King Diesel, I think the original battery cables have been replaced by something much more lightweight.

Can anyone tell me what size / gauge the cables should be? There are 3 that I know of: the negative ground, the one that connects the (2) 6-volt batteries together, and the positive one from the terminal to the solenoid.

Any advice / information is always appreciated!

Lee,
If your cables are thin, they are meant for a 12 volt battery system. If they are fairly thick, they are meant to use with 6 volt batteries. Don

somebody is sure blowing smoke here!i have never heard of this"voltage is what makes it crank faster". so why dont you take your 12v out of your lawn tractor and see if it will turn that tractor over.i dont think so.2 6v @ 675 cranking amps times 2= 1350 cranking amps. one or two 12v at 1000 c.amps ea = 1000 c. amps.to get the same amps you need to get into the big cat. batterys, where do you mount them on a 730?they came from factory with 2 6v and those tractors started for years, and now what? they wont because of 6v, give your head a shake. the higher the amps the faster it will spin!another thing 2 12v are twice the money as 2 6v.if the tractor is in decent shape they start in a few spins, not nesessary to crank and crank which is hard on starter.i will stick with the two 6v in series because they crank the engine over faster than 1, 2, or 10 hooked in parallel.i am talking new batts. and 00 cables.

OK, here goes another way. Compare electricity to water. You have a large tank of water, 2,000 gallons, but a small pump that will only generate 45 PSI out of a 2" hose. Next, over here we have a 1,000 gallons of water, but a pump that will blast out 90PSI out of a 2" hose. Which will knock you on your back? Compare the tank of water to amperage, & the PSI to voltage. Amperage is the volume, but voltage is the pressure.

Good analogy, I was trying to think of a good way to explain this.

Our '63 830 (higher hp but essentially the same as a 730) used two 12v batteries, never paid attention if the were in series for 24v or parallel for longer cranking and to still have enough push to crank after the manifold heaters were used. All I know is that they started the old girl at 20 below or so.

Don't know what climate you live in, but if it's cold, 2 Group 30's, or 31's, 12V, 1,000Amp each will give the best performance. 2 12's hooked in parallel will spin the engine 1/2 again as fast as 2 6V's hooked in series. In 1970, Case switched to 2 12's. 2/0 cable will give the best service. Battery cable is like water pipe, the bigger the cable, the more juice it will carry. Maybe ol'e Doug won't see this, but keep the Ether can away.

John, thanks for saying what I was going to say on 2 12v's vs 2 6'v's, when I worked at case we switched alot of IH's over to 2 12v's and they cranked alot faster and yes my 1070 and 1570 has 2 12v's. when voltage decreases amperage increases. oops, I used a little either (that I bought at CASE) on my 830ck last night!! :)As for rustred you can do what you want. I know what works for me.

Yeap John I agree with you. 2 sixs will crank for ever but sometime not fast enough to start the tractor. It takes cranking speed to fire diesels. That why you can replace 2 6"s in a 930 with a 12 , 1000 amp and it will almost throw the motor out of the tractor. Just waiting till the day the 6"s in our 730 go bad. I knwo a 12 will pop it off much faster.

two high amp 6v. in series gives more cranking power than 2 or 10 12v in parallel.thats why they came from the factory with 2 6v.

You apparently do not live in the north where the oil gets thick! Yes you get more cranking amps from 2 6 volt batteries, BUT you get more voltage from 1 12 volt. Voltage is what makes it crank faster. More deep cycle cranking amperage that you get from the 2 6 volts will crank it longer, but without the speed it will not start anyway. THROW THE 2 6 VOLTS IN THE SCRAP BATTERY PILE AND PUT 12'S IN. You will never regret it! 12's will last for 6 years. 6's need replaced at least every 3. I have 9 diesel tractors and 3 trucks around so this is 35 years of northern thick oil experience speaking.

2-12v's will spin it faster, speed makes heat which ignites dsl. fuel, they will crank longer with 2- 6v's, any of my dsl. tractors/combines get 2 ought cable, if you have 2 good batteries stay with 6v's but if you have to buy new ones I would put in 12v's

I use #1-0 welding cables to connect these batteries. On my 700 diesel, I use 2 group 24F 12 volt batteries connected in parallel, more cranking power than the 2 6 volt batteries in series. With this setup, I only have 2 cables. One positive to positive and direct to the starter solenoid and 1 negative to negative and direct to ground.... Gene
