Greetings, one and all:

Just a quick note to thank all of you who offered me great ideas on how to unstick the rusted pipes on the front end of my VAC14 tractor. Before the thing let loose, I had to use three of your suggestions in combination. (1) Come-along chained to a tree plus (2) lots of heat plus (3) a two ton jack wedged between a 4x4 beam riding on the back axle finally got it to move. It looks much better now and steers easier, too.

Thanks again for all of your great suggestions.

Harold

Great Job ! Was the axle tube twisted like you thought or had it just turned in the outer tube ? Thanks, Farmerhr

The inside tube needed to be moved forward about an inch or so. I suspect that many years ago someone drove this tractor into a stationary object with such force as to push the left side of the wide front end back a bit. Then it all rusted in place.

I suppose the best policy for someone who purchased one of these tractors was to remove the pipes periodically and slather it with grease, or at least shoot some oil in between those two pipes. After the rust takes hold, it's nearly impossible to break these things loose. It finally gave in, however. I drove the tractor this evening and the before and after contrast now feels like I've got power steering!
