I would like to replace the mag on my LA ("51)to a distributor. How do I adapt?

My advice is to stay with the Mag is has better spark and the pints will last forever in other words no more tune up until you pass it on to someone else. With distributor you are constantly replacing burnt points and resetting the system.

Walt:
Plus, with a distributor, he has to have battery to provide spark.

Tom if he is old like us he may well need that battery to start it. Giggle.
Walt

Re: LA Mag to distributer in reply to Walterdavies, 10-01-2009 10:15:33
I can understand very well why someone would change to a dist. I have 10 gas tractors all pre 1954 that have dist. on them, all daily runners used around the farm. I also have 5 pre 1954 tractors that run a couple times a month that have mags on them. I spend at least 10 times as much time trying to keep 5 mags running than I do 10 dist. Five minutes and $5.00 will get any dist firing if I have trouble. If you had to mess with a mag at 30 degrees below zero in a 40 MPH wind to get the cattle fed you would have an entirely different view of the mags. If the dist. is set up with the right coil and proper resister it will run for many years with no problems, and if they get wet 5 minutes with a light bulb on the inside of the dist. cap and it will be running. Try that with a mag. I would never ever change my daily runners back to mags!! Just plain dumb #2.

my SC that I use around the farm and all 3 pullers all have dists., If I need a rotor or points I go to town and get them. Case mags. were great and some still are and some of my antiques run them so if I have a good mag. it gets used on a collector and my user tractors get distributors, with a little creativity a dist. can be mounted to an LA but if I bought one with a good mag. I would probably leave it as is. Signed, Just Plain Dumb

To paraphrase a former President, "Walt there you go again". This is an informational forum so lets try to keep personal attacks out of it. There may be a good reason laguy wants to switch over. His mag may be bad and he is unable to find a replacement or replacemnt parts, his personal preference may be for a breaker points system, or a number of other viable reasons. You stated your valuable opinon in your first post, it would have been nice if you had just left it at that. The last time you started a name calling deludge it wasn't pretty, I had hoped you would have learned from that time. I hope you think twice about starting another one.

I think parts from a D that had a flange mount mag. and a delco or IH dist. that fits the flange mount would fix you up. Go for it! You will not be sorry. DK (just plain dumb #2)

I envy you having to make this decision, as the next (and probably the last)tractor for my collection will be an LA as it holds a very special place in my heart. I have no place to keep another tractor yet, but will have in a few months I hope. Good luck with the old LA. My mail is open, if you have any digital photos I would love to see it.
