I am preparing to replace the PTO output shaft seal on a '54 WD 45. It has leaked so much of the fluid out that it's basically down below the seal now and stopped leaking. There are a couple of drain plugs at the bottom of the engine - one on the PTO gear housing itself, and one toward the back of the tractor, apparently in the transmission case. There are also two places to fill the PTO/transmission fluids, one up by the Hydraulic fluid dipstick cap and one behind the clutch pedal. Do I need to drain both of these drain plugs before I remove the PTO gear housing cover, and in order to replace the 17 quarts of transmission fluid?

There seems to be a place to fill and a place to drain in each of the two sections - the PTO and the transmission... are they connected/share the same fluid? I want to change the fluids in both anyway, but I'm curious about how the tractor is laid out, and want to get everything straight in my head for maitenance in the future.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If your PTO is so low it has about stopped leaking, then your transmission is probably empty as well as the PTO is the low point. There are 3 "drain" plugs and 2 "fill" plugs. The drain plugs are under the differential, the transmission and the PTO. The "fill" plugs are located as you describe. Use both "fill" plugs when filling and bring up level with bottom of each fill opening. The PTO output seal I used was National # 6241S picked up at my local auto parts store. I understand that National #470950 will also work. The A-C number is: 224779. I replaced the PTO shifter shaft seal while I had it apart but it really didn't need to be replaced. If you do need it, the A-C number is:224642. I used National #470027. Bush hogging high grass has been the downfall of my seals. If you aren't vigilant, the tall grass will wrap itself around the shaft, work itself into and wipe out the seal.

Brian, thanks for the info about the seal #s and the look-out for cutting tall grass. I would usually not think to check the tractor for something like grass on the PTO shaft when I was filling up/taking a break.

I appreciate the info.
