My "C" narrow front end wobbles - what is worn to cause this - the bearings in the pedestal? and is this a BIG job to fix ?? Also where can the parts be found to repair the pedestal ? |

The problem probably is a worn follower on the lever shaft. Remove the starter, gas tank, tool box and the steering arm. This will allow you to remove the side plate on the steering gear box, Pull the lever shaft out and you will see that the follower is worn flat on the sides. This part (the follower) can be purchased from a JD dealer. If there is slop in the front pedestal, you must jack up the front end, remove the wheels, and the 5 bolts at the top of the pedestal tube. You will find shims and gaskets between the 2 pieces. Remove 1 or 2 to remove the slop. You need to have a rotation of gasket, shim, gasket, or gasket, gasket, to provent leaks. Don't remove too many as you will remove all of the slop in the gears and you need to have some play. LOL Bob

My WC had the same problem. Found out a lot of things needed attention. Ended up replacing the bearing in the pedestal, all four wheel bearings, and the pin in the worm gear. This made a huge difference. The bearing in the ped. was beat up worse then I've ever seen for a taperred roller. Must have been loose and banging around for a long while.

You need to narrow it down a little more. Play could be coming from the steering gear box, one of the tie rod ends or in the front pedestal. How much can you turn the steering wheel without the tires moving and where is the excess movement at?

The steering gearbox under the gas tank needs adjustment. should be a screw with a lock nut on it.

There are holes in the sides of the tool box where you should be able to get to them.

So you think its in the box & not the pedestal? It even wobbles @ slow speed. Looks like I might need to pull the sheet metal off around the box. I sure hate to mess up the paint but I've got to get this fixed.

The adjustment screw would be behind the starter. You would need to remove the starer to get at it. Chances are that it is a Ross which would most likely need inside repair. A Gemmer normally will not give a great deal of play compared to the Ross. I have pictures of both laid out in pieces if interested.
