I am putting a D17 back together that I got as a basket case. The gasket set contains clips that (looking at the parts book) appear to hold the rear oil pan cork gasket in place.?.? Is this really the purpose, and do the stay there permanently, or only for installation?? I didnt disassemble engine, so am not sure of these clips..Thanks for any help....Dan |

| The clips hold it till you get it in place, they don't stay on. DO NOT trim any of the gasket. It may look too long and people trim them which leads to early leaks. |

| Thanks for the info..these clips were strange to me, as I had not seen anything like them before. After installing oil pan with these clips in plaace, it appears they may be difficult to remove without dammaging the cork gasket...is this the case?? Thanks ...Dan |

| I'll be curious what the experts say. When I was a kid and we worked on WD engines. My Dad always made little clips out of wire to hold the pan gasket in place with lots of gasket cement and then pulled them out after the bolts were in place. We got a lot of practice one summer when a crank shaft broke pulling a 3-bottom plow and the dealer sold us a WD-45 crank which was discovered when the tractor was fired back up. Talk about a high compression engine???cleddy |
