Anyone know the nitty gritty on the steering gearboxes on these? 1/4 turn of play in the steering wheel, and only a small bit of it appears to be from worn splines on the pitman shaft. The rest is internal. Where does all the play come from? |

you have a "Ross" and the pin that acts as a tooth on the cross shaft is worn out.

I get about 1/8 turn slop normally...did you check the set bolts on the front of the tierod ends? They are cone shaped and if not tight, they can add alot of slop. If they are tight and still sloppy, you can grind the tip off until they fit snug in the set pit.

two types of gear boxes. both have a worm gear on the main shaft up to the steering wheel. one type- the cross shaft has a pin that rides in the worm. pin wears down to a point. disassemble and replace or weld up the pin. other box has 1/4 gear on the cross shaft. 1-2 teeth engagement. side cover can be loosened and adjusted up and down to move gear closer to the worm.... eithere case, better to remove the box, remove the cover, clean and inspect.

Thank you. Mine is a Ross gearbox. I'm not sure which is which, but I have a better idea of what to look for now. (When I manage to get that far along)

There is an adjustment screw and locknut on the side of mine. I loosened it up and turned it back & forth, but it didn't seem to change anything.
