When I bought my D-17, it had special studs holding the wheels to the hubs. These studs have heads that were about1 1/2" inch long instead of about 1/2". There are threads inside of the the head of the same size and pitch as the stud. It looks like someone just bolted a standard D17 wheel with these studs in addition to the one that was already there. It could be done. I don't know how it worked. I'd expect it to be too weak since there is no hub center ring to carry the weight. And I've never seen this kind of stud since.

When I farmed at one time before our D21 I had a pair of WD45's hooked in tandem pulling our 18' AC wheel disc and 4 section drag preping Corn and bean ground prior to planting. Both Wd45's had a set of M&W 13x28 I think they were duals which used J bolts to attach to the inner wheel rails. They never ever worked loose that I can remember.

You could buy an identical set, and bolt them on to the existing hub, maybe with longer bolts, but shifting might be an issue. You could do what I did in 1972 on my first D17- used band duals, held on with J-bolts that hooked around the end of the Power Shift rails. Snugged up tight, never came loose. Could also install eyes in the inside wheel centers, and hook the J-bolts to them. I use those same duals that way, now on a Ford backhoe.

Without going out to measure them, they are wide enough to give about 4 inches space between the tires- so maybe 10 inches. Wider space is better in mud.

I"m wrong on that- measured them: 6 inch wide spacer band puts the tires right next to each other. Make them 10 inches wide for 4 inches spacing. Remember, the dual band is two inches smaller diameter than the wheel you are matching up to.

Re: WD 45 rear dual wheels in reply to Vito, 11-03-2009 14:39:15
I messed up again-dual bands are the same diameter as the wheel you are matching to, not two inches smaller. I was thinking of how I modified the 16.9x28 dual to fit an 18.4x26 combine wheel. I used a 26 inch band, mounted to the 28 inch band, with 3/4 inch square stock at 90 degree spacing around the band, bolted to both the 26 and the 28 inch bands. That setup matched the 26 inch combine wheels. FWIW, those two sizes are the same in height, so match well.
