From a distance, that looks like a 3/8 square head setscrew. Try an extension from your 3/8 socket set, backwards, female end on the setscrew, to get out where you have some room to work. Then use your favorite crescent, vice-grip, or pipe wrench on the male end of the extension. On larger squares, such as drain plugs etc, a 12 point socket, 1/8 oversize works great. Eg-1/2 square plug, use 5/8 socket, 3/4 plug, use 7/8 socket. HTH Willie

The MAC tool man (and probably others) have 8 point sockets that would make short work of this. kinda pricey though.

use a deep well socket for the lock nut and an open end wrench for the set screw.

Might also find a proper size square tube for the square nut- more swing room with a wrench.

thanks guys, I used a combination of what you all suggested. I finally got it! I had to file down a 3/8 wrench to get swing room, and turned a socket upside down and used the square end of socket , with a vice grip, off she came. thank you.
