| | Well, sort of. The shoes come out from the hole in the top. However, to do this the lower pivot pin needs to be pulled first. Can be a tough job as Obsession notes. I have drilled & tapped the end of the pin and pulled them. Still needed heat. You don't need to remove the wheels or final drives. Moving the wheels out will give a little more access to the lower pivot pins though. kevin |

| Try putting a washer on the band bolt to get little more life out of them. You need to pull the pin out of the bottom to get the brakes out. If the pin is rusted in place it may be difficult to get the brakes apart. I have cut the pins out with a torch which normally wrecks the brake shoes. You may find other methods of removing them in other posts. The brake drums can be cracked too. I replaced my WD's with he solid D17 style drums |

| Thanks for the help, The problem is that I have one brake rod borke off , and the other brake sounds like steel to steel . It appears that the wheels have to come off for access to the brake assembly . I can't see dong all the work from the top hole in the axle ? |
