  • The R was a great tractor. I recall as a boy our 70 Diesel used one and a half gals. per hr. and the R around 2 gals. The only problems we ever had was with the gas starting engines...... It was the best of the best.

  • MY FATHER BOUGHT A NEW "R" IN 1954, OUR COST WAS $5,200 WITH A STORAGE FUEL TANK. GREAT ECONOMICAL TRACTOR THAT DID A LOT OF WORK ON OUR NORTH DAKOTA FARM! I RECALL GOING OUT IN THE FIELD AT 4;30AM ONE DAY (DARK) AND THE EXHAUST WOULD SHOOT FLAMES OUT ABOUT A FOOT GOING UP A HILL IN HIGH GEAR, AN IMPRESSIVE SIGHT FOR A 15-YEAR OLD BOY. COULD OUT PULL A SUPER W-9 INTERNATIONAL, SO WE BOUGHT THE "R"

  • Good article. As a fellow owner of a restored John Deere R, I appreciate others with similar interests. When I rebuilt the main motor three years ago, R pistons were no longer available. I had the block bored out to 6 1/8" and installed JD 730 diesel pistons. I had to modify the head to accept JD 730 diesel injectors. Wow! What a difference in power and economy! Nebraska test #406, the stock R had a maximum pull of 6,644 pounds. When my R pulling against a hydraulic cylinder on a pulling sled, it measured 10,260 pounds of pull, and it didn't run out of power. It spun out. If 6,644 = 51 horsepower, then 10,260 = 79 horsepower! Keep up the good work.

  • I am restoring an "R" now. I have had to rebuild the starting motor and the transmission. I love the sound of the engine when it runs, it has a sound all of its own. I have enjoyed the challenge of restoring this unique tractor but it is very expensive!!

  • Thank you for the information. Question; Do you have any idea of their value today? I happen to have one in near excellant condition. Thank you.

  • There is an R with an 8-foot blade on an estate auction near Colome, SD on April 23, 2005. If anyone wants additional information, feel free to e-mail me (or contact the auctioneer directly, Google for "Ralph's Auction Service, Lead, SD" - I don't want to post someone else's phone number). There are also a couple B's and a 60.

Obviously that draft will increase if the implement runs deeper than eight inches, and decrease if it runs shallower. Why not use that draft fact to control the depth of work automatically?
