When using Gas, also consider brazing rod instead of welding rod. It is much easier to use, and can actually give a stronger joint if there is considerable overlap between parts as it will flow between them more easily, rather than just melting at the edges - the surface area of the joint will be greater. A few pounds of 1/8 inch flux coated brazing rod is wicked handy to have around. Cost is higher than welding rod (around 4-5 a pound), but you will save some on the gas end as it melts easier. You can get a Propane conversion kit for many brands of torches. I have just started using one. I may be using a bit more Oxygen, not sure yet. The flame seems just about as hot. The propane tank seems to be lasting forever, so if I am using more Oxygen, the acetylene savings sould more than make up for it. Propane is cleaner than acetlyene as well. If you have tried acetylene, you should knwo what I mean. No more black soot if you turn off the O2.
