  • I remember in '68 while at Willoughby South High School I would be in math class an this unusual little red jeep would be flying about mowing the grounds. This was my first and only sighting of this little jeep until your article.

  • I thought no one still had one of these in working order! i knew of one that could have been restored, but was instead put on a car frame, I think a crossly (sp) and used in parades. it was outfitted with a propane cannon on the back and was a real hit. I have long ago lost contact with the owner, but I am sure he still owns it as he was very attached to the little jeep with the big bang.

  • I may be dreaming but I think I recall seeing ads for these mowers in the back of Popular Mechanix magazine. This would have been in the 1960's if anyone has access to those issues. I remember it always sparked my interest because I loved Jeeps and it had that look...

I am looking for any additional info anyone has. There are pictures of it at "members.aol.com/joed6194/index.html". Thanks. JD

  • Attention Steve Nelson; I can shed some light on the Roof Palomino. Your photo and remarks were forwarded to be by a nephew, and until I saw them, I'd completely forgotten about that model. Earl Roof, founder of Roof Mfg. in Pontiac, Illinois, was my uncle. My father founded a machine shop there at the time Earl got his business going, and was a primary supplier of precision machined parts for all of Roof's mowers. The origin theory of the Palomino is erroneous. Earl had only one son, and he was never in the military. I don't know the origin, but will contact my cousin for more information. The various comments from other respondents regarding its application are correct. It was used primarily on large institutional lawns. Earl had joked that it could double as a golf cart, but I doubt it was ever used as such. He had a home on the golf course in Pontiac, which may have lead to the Palomino's origin and his comment. I don't know at this time how many units were produced. If you can describe the type of blade clutch it used, I may be able to help locate a replacement. My father's shop made clutches for the VP (variable pitch) line of high wheel mowers, and the Palomino may have used the same clutch. When Roof Mfg. was acquired by the Walker brothers in the early 70's, the VP line was sold off by the new owners. I believe it is now being manufactured by a firm here in California. I see these mowers for rent at various equipment rental yards here. It was the original and most successful of all the models Roof produced. Feel free to contact me at my email for more specific questions. I'll do my best to fill in the blanks.

  • WE ( Aledo fire Dept ) have one of these mowers although we do not use it to mow with. We added a water pump, siren and revolving lights, a short ladder etc. to it and painted it to look like a fire truck. we take it to parades around the area and set the nozzle on a fine spray and selectively squirt people on hot days( particulary pretty girls ),kids etc. It is a hit every where we go as we get many invites to do parades . We had a local dealer who sold a few of these. You still see one mowing once in a while.

  • I have a Roof Palamino mower too!! We bought it a couple years ago, and put it in our town's parade. I would like to talk to other Roof Palamino owners.
Steve Darling wrote on Wednesday, July 19, 2000 (PDT):
  • I too have a Roof Palamino. I purchased mine in 1995 and have done some research on them. The factory parts department is still in existance. Contact Stroller's in Pontiac Illinois. I have an original sales brochure that I would like to share, but am concerned with copyright laws. The engine service manual is available from Kohler.
Steve Darling wrote on Friday, July 21, 2000 (PDT):
  • Here's the info I mentioned the other day. Roof Palomino, Roof 60 and presumably other Roof service parts are available from "Stroller's" 15556 E. 1830 North Rd. Pontiac Illnois. 61764.The parts/instruction manual cost me $4 in 1995. At that time the sheetmetal parts had been discontinued, but most of the mechanical parts were available. Mechanically, the Palomino and the 60 are virtually the same so if you find a model 60, grab it. The sales brochure that I have states the Palomino "All Purpose Mower" has "Three overlapping, twenty inch blades mow up to five acres an hour. The Paloamino can also be used to sweep and plow roadways. Handle payloads up to 700 pounds. Or transport personnel and equipment at speeds up to 17 mph." That is a direct quote from the sales brochure. They also indicate that there is an optional operater's cab and a 60" dozer blade. It also mentions that the Palomino and the model 60 have a 2 speed axle, but I am of the impression that was only on the very early units. The brochure also shows the mowers with white painted wheels, and mine has black painted wheels. Regarding the history of the design, when I spoke with the folks at Stroller's, they put me in touch with the man who designed it and he said that his inspiration was from his son's toy Jeep. If you want engine parts, you must go to a Kohler authorized distributor and purchase a service manual for a model "K482" engine. Be warned, Kohler engines are EXPENSIVE to rebuild. My Palomino has been modified with an electric clutch from a John Deere and seems to be an improvement over the original. It was done by the previous owner. He also painted mine what he called "desert storm tan". I don't recommend it. It looks better in red. In 1995 Stroller's still had original tires available if you want to keep the original look. Its nice to know that I don't have the only one of these things. artint195

  • My husband and I also own a Palamino Jeep/Mower. If I have my information correct my husbands father got the mower used in the 70's. My husband and his older brother abused the mower, as a toy for a few years and then I was left to rust behind the barn. About a year ago my husband dug it out and has made a project of repairing it. We are die hard Jeep fans, the mower deck is missing, a 6 inch lift, 125 four wheeler motor, suspension and many custom parts now have the old mower looking more like a Jeep. Until recently we didn't know what the grill looked like, (according to my husband, they wrecked it so long ago he couldn't remember it.) so we have machine a grill that resembles the front of my jeep. After seeing the pictures from this article we are going to replace the missing tail gate with one that resembles the original. Hope to be able to send you pictures of our final project when we are done, and I would love to hear from more owners. Jr

  • I wish I would have found this site sooner so I would have known what I really had. My dad aquired two Roof Palominos about 15 years ago, but they were in pieces. They were basically just empty shells. Unfortunatly one of them was destroyed, and the other was just rusting away in the weeds. So, about a year ago I finally got the urge to do something with it in my spare time. I decided to make myself something to drive around the campgrounds were my wife and I like to go. I replaced the stock suspension with an ATV A-arm system, and lifted it about 6 inches. It now has a Suzuki 4-stroke engine and chain drive. Without having anything to go by but my 1999 Jeep I machined a new grill out of aluminum diamondplate, custom made a new tailgate, and new front fenders. I know some people that know alot about these machines probably think I made a really stupid mistake, but I didn't know any better at the time. I would like to get in touch with some other owners and see what one of these actually looks like, because before I saw this site I had never seen another like it.

  • well today I hauled home a ROOF PALAMINO...YaHOOOO...found it at a dealer in central illinois. I travel illinois for american Honda as the engine sales rep, and I have been looking for one of these that some would part with for a long time. This one has a PERFECT body...but the Kohler is gone and the steering box is busted and no deck..neither a big problem..this little baby will have a new V-twin Honda in it soon , as I wouldnt even consider an old 482 because they are so heavy,,,it should steer like a dream with a 90 lb engine. Very glad to find this site because I didnt lknow STollers Implement has stuff..and I will call them in the morning...Thanks to all here for sharing your knowledge about this very unique machine?

  • I am currently restoring a Roof Ranger from the 50's or 60's. It has been in my family since it was new. I saved it from the trash heap and descided to restore it. It has not run in approximately 20 years and I am contemplating putting a new engine on it if I can not get parts and labor at a more resonable price. I am in the US Air Force stationed on the Island of Guam. These mowers were so well made, mine has only two spots which have rusted through. The hole for the valve stems on the wheels are rusted out. Nothing a little work cant fix. I would love to hear from anybody who has one of these wonderful mowers to sell or where I can get parts. I am looking at restoring more of these once I get back stateside.

The school let the mower sit next to the bus shed for a backup. My dad knew the man that worked in that shed for quite along time. The man was able to convince the school to sell the mower to us for $100 dollars. since then it is still running as good as ever. What I am wondering is if you can email me or call me with any information on where to find parts or any info on the tractor itself and I will do the same. I am from lockport Illinois and my phone # is (815) 838-3010 thank you. kyle kozlowski

  • Greetings! I submitted the article about my ROOF PALOMINO "mini jeep" (pictures included)in 1999 I think. The Palomino is still running strong. I've been pleased with all the comments and interest out there. I have yet to call the people in Pontiac, IL listed by someone who responded to find out about parts. At present, I don't really need anything other than the blade clutch. And I'm just really careful, to watch my toes when I'm standing near it running (and engaged). I would like to explore the possibility of selling the beast however. It seems there are some real collectors out there who may have the interest and expertise to restore this baby to it's former glory (a job that wouldn't take much for a true mechanic, not just a knuckle buster like me). So I'd appreciate info anybody has on who may be interested in owning this rare machine. I think I'll set a reasonable price, however, I will need to replace it, I'm looking at a landscaper's type walk behind with which I can do both trimming and the bigger stuff and get a bit of exercise at the same time. I'll post this note elsewhere and see what kind of response I get. Please feel free to e-mail me directly.

  • My name is Dean Sidfrids and my father Lowell created the design for the Palamino. The body design was taken from a tonka toy jeep. The prototype was built in our basement when I was a boy. Earl Roof owner of the company issued a challenge to his design engineers one of which was my father, Lowell Sidfrids. The other was John Brue. The challenge was to come up with a new & unique mower design. My father came up with the palamino design. John Brue came up with the lariat design. Both designs were accepted by Earl Roof and put into production. They were both very successful. For further information feel free to contact me at my e-mail address.

Backtell Bros from Forrest IL took over the mower business and have moved it to Gibson City Ill in the old Baille truck building they seem to be doing real well. I got to operate it once I was old enough, and I've never seen another like it.

  • Some years back, somebody donated a little red Jeep similar to the one in your picture, to our Fire Company, to use in parades. It was evidently ho-made! Had small air tires. Now, this Jeep was built of plywood, but the body was just the same, with square corners. The fenders were plywood, covered with tin. I've been wondering if somebody used a Roof Jeep to copy the panel sizes. If anybody has a Roof with missing parts, they could use the same method to build body parts-plywood, covered with tin panels. The hood, and body panels, can be formed by a sheet metal shop, as can the corners, if you want them rounded! Rusty Jones

  • I wish I was better at this computer thing. When I met my wife in 1976 her step Dad had the coolest looking mower. I asked him right there and then that if he were to sell it I wanted first crack at it. Well my dreams came true in the summer of 2000. My wife surprized me with it. She talked her step Dad into selling it to her, so $2000.00 later I am the proud owner of a ROOF PALAMINO in excellent condition. Also he had two owners manuals, a full color quadfold brochure of the Roof Lawncare line of equipment, and another black&white brochure, that came with the Palamino. My wife's step Dad puchased the mower at an auction in the late 60's. He was told it was used at a golf course. The model # 96018 and serial# 2646 is all I had to go on to find out what year it is. Now that I have found this web site maybe I can get some sort of idea. It has the Kohler V-twin engine, with the high $ low range hydrostatic trans. It looks just like Steve's, red with chrome hubcaps. I live in mid Michigan, and when I mow my lawn people will sit on the side of the road and just watch, sometimes for as long as 15 min. Thanks a bunch to all who have made comments. If you want to know more just get a hold of me, Chris

This is sad because they made virtually indestructible products. Perhaps if they had a little more repeat business (wear outs) they would still be in business). So they have gone the way of Route66 and Toddle House Diners.

  • HI, I haven't looked at this site for almost a year and was interested to see your comment (Chris). I haven't been using mine for a while, but I used it for quite a few years every week. I didn't get too many 15 minute gaukers, but I got a LOT of double takes, and people nearly crashing trying to figure out what the heck they just saw. Mine hasn't been started for over a year. I need to get a new battery and get her going so she doens't rot. I'm giving it to my son-in-law as soon as he has space for it...which may be a while, so I need to get it out and play around with it a bit. I quit using it every week because with the wide, 60" cut, it trended to scalp a bit, and had little things to fix on it nearly every week. I "replaced" it with a professional grade walk-behind Toro which turns on zero radius, so now I get my large area mowed in 1.5 hours (faster than I did withe the wider Roof...and no repairs needed) and get some exercise doing it. I do miss the gaukers though! I think the heavy duty Roof walk-behinds are still available from www.roofmowers.com/, which is run by Bachtold Brothers in Illinois. Parts for the Palomino are almost non-existant, but if you browse these comments, there seem to be quite a few people interested, and some with the mowers. Also I have received many e-mails over the past few years since I submitted this article. A few of my guesses about the origin were incorrect. I even heard from some family members of the original owners and others who worked at the Pontiac, IL factory. So it's been interesting. Browsing these comments makes me think I need to get mine fired up again! Cheers, Steve

Come to find out it looks like my problem is in the drive axle, which is where all the gears and shafts are. I got a copy of the parts diagram but it doesn't go into any detail about how to remove the axle and gear box. There is a nut on the drive axle, not shown on the parts diagram and I can't get it loose. Was wondering if anyone had an owners manual or repair manual for the Roof Ranger Riding Mower? Just asking on a chance.

I have always wanted this machine for restoration purposes. Your article was very informative, as I had no idea the machines were this old. Your pictures were welcomed, as they began the process of solved the mower deck mounting. I do not have any of the mounting hardware, but am able to reproduce this easily myself. I need detailed photos, though. May I ask, if anybody has detailed photos, to e-mail them to me. These would be for restoration purposes, covering aspects of belt routing, guard placement, and the operation of the mower ride height adjustment. I think this machine is missing some external hardware, and I would need to reproduce these pieces. Again, thanks for the article, it was very helpful.

I first came into contact with this piece of equipment about 25 years ago growing up with a neighbor who's father was in charge of maintenence for a cemetary. The tractor had blown the original engine and the drive line assembly for the new engine was so mickey moused that it was never in balance enough to stay together. About 7 years ago I finaly talked the neighbor into letting me have it. I had to wrestle a tree that had decided to grow through the engine compartment for my prize. Well the project has finally started to come together and the unit is in tact with the exception of the motor, drive line and grill/ headlight housing assemblies. We are currently fitting it with a 14 horse kohler out of an old Jacobsen lawn tractor. I was wondering if you could tell me what originally was under the hood and if you have come across any other of these rare machines. Regards Bill Clark

I am looking for a fuel pump and unfortunately, I can not find the Kohler Spec number but I believe it might be a K582..(from what I read above!) Any help to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated! It looks like my father had changed the fuel pump twice in the past 10 yrs and he saved the old fuel pumps. I found 2 fuel pump boxes # 277539-S and in one of the boxes I found an older fuel pump with a different cam arm so I am not sure if the 277539-S is the correct pump since it seamed like he changed it more often than I would think it should have needed. Do these fuel pumps not last long if the unit is not used all the time? If so that would make more sense! I also put some photos up on a web page of the pumps and the engine. Also, I would be interested if anyone might know where to find (from the photos) the spec number. I think if it was a plate on the right side, it might have been removed at some point or another. Here is the link to the photos; rbrkass.com/kohler/ Thanks in advance!

  • Besides the Palomino, Roof manufacturing made the Roof 60 , the 60 standing for 60 inch cutting deck, which was very popular with many of the golf courses and commercial lawn companies in the late 1960 s and early 1970 s. The Palomino and the 60 both shared the same frame, engine and hydrostatic transmission, the early models were a single range, and the later models had both a hing and low range eaton/peerless hydrostat/trans. Both the Palomino and 60 used the same underbelly cutting deck. What is extremely rare were the options on the Palomino for a snow plow blade, the front mounted snow thrower, the front mounted power brush, and especially the enclosed canvas cab for winter use. For those who want to restore these units to the original factory color, I believe after talking with one of the Roof Manufacturing employees, you can substitute red IH paint which is the same shade of red. AS a former operator of an early70 s model 60 , let me tell you that this was one mean cutting machine rated at cutting several acres per hour, and in high gear, therewasn t another machine out on the market that could keep up with it until Hesston manufacturing came out with their 3 wheeled ZTR with the 72 deck. Roof continued to make other utility and riding mowers for quite a whle longer, but none seem to have been as popular as the palomino and the 60 .

I told the guy that he should sell it but he wanted to trade, so we did. He has it painted like a jeep off of the TV show MASH. He even put a winshield in the front and a fuel can in the back along with a spare tire. I looks good but it is not original. If any body know where there are parts I would also be interested. It's probably the last model that Roof made, in the rider-mowers. The only problem is with the friction drive rubber disc, that wears out too fast. I replace it with rubber of my own, so not an expense item... only the work. Great little mower actually, and about 7 or 8 hp.

But, I loved the looks of it. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford it. I was still in college at the time. • What a surprise to stumble on this Palamino website and CONGRATS to those who have contributed. I didn't know it at the time around 1968, I believe, that I was to played a part of Palimino history. I worked on the very first start up assembly of the Pal's. It wasn't even an assembline line at all - all hand assembled by a small team, one unit at a time, starting with the chassis, frame, wiring, trans, engine including the popular decals! I was indeed the decal man - but I don't recall how many we produced starting that summer. I remember the engine was a 18HP? Koehler with a hydrostat transmission and it was a solid one. I've been away from my home town for decades, but my father originally was a farmer neighbor with Earl Roof, the founder, and remember Lowell Sidfrids the original design engineer on the Pal's, along with John Brue, Rusty and others. Doesn't surprize me about the longevity either. It was fun to be a part of another example of great American & farmer engineering! Would be interested in seeing any pics. Would be great to have a national Palamino reunion, maybe at the time of the Threshermans reunion in Pontiac, Ill.

My family was a Roof dealer and sold their mowers, from the high wheel fence row, brush cutter mowers from the mid 50's up through the 3 and 4 wheel riding mowers (late 70's early 80's). Yes, I still have and use one of the 3 wheel Rangers. Although my 43 year old Ranger is getting mighty tired after all those years. I also have a Dealer's parts manual with exploded view of most all the models, except for the Roof Palomino. I also have a color sales brochure from the late 70's with a picture of all the Roof models of that year, including Mr. Lassiter's mower. E-mail me at Burjowi@Aol.com for more info and I will try to help if I can.

I contacted Stoller's in Pontiac,Il and a guy told me he may still be able to get a replacement bag made for them but it wouldn't say ROOF on it. If you was able to get a plain replacement bag and wanted the name ROOF in the red letters on it you may be able to go to a graphics place and see if they can do it. Since ROOF went out of business I think it will be very tough to find an original one that is any good. I remember seeing a ROOF up in Rockford,IL at Hammer's Sales and Service and they had an old Billy Goat Bag on it. It will have to be the Goat bag that has the shoot up on top kinda like the ROOF. Another option may be the bag for a Parker Vac 35. They just won't be able to be split for easy dumping like the ROOF bag,but may work.

These were used commercially by the city park department. They were eventually replaced and retired to scrap. Very heavy duty and they did a very good job of cutting. Do yourself a favor. • I am from Pontiac Illinois where the Roof Palomino Mowers were designed and built. We have formed a small group to enhance ownership of the mowers and document the history of the Roof mowers. Our group is growing and we invite everyone interested in the restoration or history of the company to contact us so you can be included in our e-mail mailing list. I have a Palomino and several 60 mowers that I purchased last year. Earl Roof and his Company built a great group of mowers and the Roof 60 became a wonderful mower that many schools and parks departments used for many years. • Hi guys! It's been a while since I checked in on the comment section. I'm always amazed at the responses that still keep coming in. My Roof is now in the capable hands of my son-in-law, and it was driven in a small town 4th of July parade in Indiana last summer. So it's still drawing plenty of attention. Thanks to Dave Sullivan whose comment is just above this one. The Roof lawn tractor and Palomino won't fade away! My father-in-law still has one of the original high wheel mowers. That thing is a beast and works great for clearing brush! Cheers everybody and check out Dave's newsletter and join his collector's club!

We are a historical base group hoping to keep the history of the Company alive. We have a little club called the Roof Riders and we mostly are in treated in the Palomino and 60 series mowers. But we are trying to keep all Roof mowers from being crushed. This has been a great site to connect with other mowers owners. Please call or email me if you have mowers or parts for Roof mowers. My email is sully.firebird@gmail.com or call 815.579.0026. We do not want these mowers crushed....
