One thing that can cause that is a thrust washer with it's inside diameter worn to large. These washers are located between the gear and shift collar hub. When the collar is shifted into gear the outer edge of the washer can drop down to far because the inside is worn. The outer edge falls into the hollow part of the collar locking it in gear. By removing the shift lever plate on the trans you can look in and determine if that is the cause. Also look for a badly worn shift fork. If either of these is at fault the tractor will have to be split to correct the problem. Rod.
