I have worked with the 188 diesel and later the 207. This engine was the same in all equipment that used it except for fuel settings and rpm's. There were design changes in sleeve counterbore diameter to cure a sleeve recession problem early but the basic engine remained the same till the into of the CDC (cummins). Our dealership sold literally hundreds of these engines in everything from the 430's-630's on the ag side and in the famous Case backhoes through the 580B's and 350-450 crawlers and many more pieces that used it. As with any series , when you sell that many you will occasionally see some failures. The 188 was no more or less prone to breaking cranks than any other engine. The 70 series big block engine as used in the 970-1175 was a great engine also and occasionally they will break a crank. I would not pass up a 530 diesel worrying about breaking cranks. mEl
