I started on a foot clutch SC at 8 years old (when my legs were long enough to sit on the edge of the seat and push it in). While I am not totatly averse to the hand clutch, we had an LA, JD R and D2 Cat with clutch lever. My preference is the foot clutch because that is what I started on but either is OK with me.
As far as pulling, our SC was a pretty good tractor based on its HP. Yes, the DC was a bigger engine and pulled more but the SC pulled 3 14's in 2nd some times 3rd gear in the central Texas black gumbo. It would pull the 3 14s on the flat spots and down hill in NW Colorado at altitudes of +/-7,000 ft but as we all know Case tractors were heavier built that the equivalent size competitive tractors and what it took to pull the tractor itself UP the steep wheat fields caused us to remove one bottom from the BER plow.
I think its all in what you started with and if you started on a DC that is where your heart and preferences will always stay. I still like the SC and here in central Texas its a good 3 plow tractor, stump pusher, gravel road grader and many other things we all need a tractor to do around the "place". If I can ever find a 53/54 SC in decent shape I will probably be forced (<: to put it in my collection.
Jim, we didn't have any barn doors to tear off so I can't identify with that problem. I did get it stuck in the mud a time or two and it took the LA or 830 to pull it out though.
