Introduction to the Gibson D

The Gibson Manufacturing Corporation was founded 1946 by Wilber Gibson. The Gibson
tractors were made from around 1948 to 1952. The picture shown
here is of a 1948 Gibson model D. If you notice, this tractor
is driven with a lever. You could get a attachment to convert it to a steering wheel.
The Gibson had many implements available.
They made plows, disc, blades, and cultivators just to name a few. These tractors were
originally made in Washington State, then the owner’s son moved the company to
California.
The Gibson D was powered by a 1 cycle Wisconsin motor,
about 9 horses. But with the big rear end they were not easily stopped.
They made thousands of the smaller Gibson Tractors,
however they didn’t make as many bigger ones.
Interestingly, the same wheels that fit
a Gibson D also fit the Farmall Cub. These tractors are very miniature and
are about the same size as a four-wheeler.
The Gibson D was an all purpose
tractor. It had three speeds forward with 2, 4, and 7 MPH, and
reverse at 2.5 MPH. The approximate weight is 910 lbs.
The transmission is very similar to a Gibson model A's. The rear wheels are
adjustable on the D's. This made it possible for the plow to fit
correctly. I believe there was also a front bumper option due to photos
I have seen. You didn't need a battery due to the fact that elbow
grease was the only way to start it. All you had was a rope.
The rear hitch was moved by a lever. This was a metal bar spring
loaded that was used to connect the attachments. Some Gibson's had a air
cooled motor it also featured a simplified clutch. They are very hard
to find and as all old tractors they are worth much more today than
when they were new.
