The Day Tractor Lovers Dream About
by Angus Crawford
The day started at five o'clock on the morning of Friday, the January 29, 1999. My
father, my sister, my uncle, my cousin and myself all climbed into my
uncle's Toyota van. It was six thirty in the morning and we had a long
day ahead.
We traveled for six and a half hours to our destination - a little country town
with a population of no more then one hundred
and fifty people (57 of them being children under the age of thirteen).
We arrived hoping to meet up with a man we knew had over one hundred and
fifty tractors in his possession.
When we arrived, looking like typical
city clickers along with five cameras and a video camera, we were told
he was out and wouldn't be back for days. We knew he had four different
locations where he kept the tractors. There were four tractors that we
knew we wanted a 730, 300,900 and a 600. We started in an old open-faced
shed with about ten tractors in it. A mixture of Case's, JD's, Twin
Cities and some other random tractors. We were only interested in Case's
and there were two of the four models that we wanted in the first shed - a
730 and a 600, as well as three other Case's.
Little did we know we had a
long exciting day ahead of us. We video taped each Case and documented
each one. After the first shed we headed off to the second. here we found
more Case's. The guy was a bit of a Minneapolis Moline freak and this
trip converted us all into one as well. After traveling to eight
different locations, seeing more then one hundred and fifty tractors,
spending six hours in the process - we had seen 22 Case's, some very rare and
well looked after.
We had seen a Case VA that was not recorded in our
records (the whole two of them), a Case 300 with a front end
loader, Case 400 , five Case 730's, three LA's, two C's, two
L's, an 800, three 500's and a DEX. We also found a very small
cute tractor called a SEX. This little baby caused great confusion
because there was no records of such a tractor, even in a thick book
called "150 years of Case" which has every model of case ever made.
After much research we found it is a Model S but had the EX put on once
it was exported out to Australia. This was a dream day and one of the
best days of my entire life.
